Advantages of a Forehead Thermometer
The Forehead Thermometer is Non-invasive allowing the user to measure temperature whilst a child is asleep. Not only useful for sleeping babies but ideal for infants, children and adults who often get ear infections and so cannot have their temperature taken that way.
How Does the Vicks Forehead Thermometer Work?
The temperature is taken by moving the thermometer from 1 cm above the centre of the eyebrow to 1.25 cm above the tail of the eyebrow area and back up again. It works by measuring the infrared energy emitted from the skin above the eyebrow area and the surrounding tissue. The energy is collected through the lens and converted to a temperature value. Temperature readings obtained by scanning above the eyebrow area will provide the greatest accuracy.
What does the Fever Insight/Traffic Light Technology Do?
The Fever Insight Technology is a colour-coded temperature display which provides an easily understandable indication if the temperature is normal or elevated. It can also help parents better explain the meaning of temperature to their child and get them involved to make the experience pleasant.
The screen shows a coloured back light as well as the number digitally:
Green if the temperature is normal (36.1°C -37.1°C)
Yellow when the temperature is slightly elevated (37.2°C -38.2°C)
Red alert to indicate a possible fever (38.3°C -42.8°C)
It is important to know each individual’s normal temperature when they are well. A child’s normal temperature can be as high as 37.7°C or low as 36.1°C. Take multiple readings when healthy to determine normal temperature--this is the only way to accurately diagnose a fever.

I brought this particular thermometer as my son suffers from alot of bad ear infections so i wanted something that was completley non-intrusive yet accurate at the same time. It is a great design, not having to even touch the skin. It is ideal for taking temperatures when children are asleep yet when they are awake the 'traffic light system' is a great way of involving them and taking their mind off the task in hand! The thermometer is really easy to use and I would strongly recommend it to other parents.

I had quite a few problems with this thermometer and would not recomend it. I tried taking my families temperatures on quite a few days and 80% of the time I was unable to due to error messages appearing on the screen.
The message in question said that the temperature of the room was too cold to take a reading. This was rediculus as it was during the summer of 2009, it wasnt cold and i was in t-shirt most of the time. What you want is to be able to take someones temperature at any time... Its a good idea, but in reality it doesnt work.

I have given this product four stars and not five simply because it's a bit fiddly and takes a bit of practice before you get accurate results. I knew the first couple of results that I got were incorrect (I checked with another thermometer) so persevered and after first thinking that a strip forehead thermometer was far less hassle and a lot easier to use, once I had practiced a bit, I got the hang of it and am really pleased with it now. Though I do think I will 'practice' again when I need to actually take my son's temperature for real.
It has a large, easy read, display that not only indicates the temperature in either C or F, it also lights up green, amber or red to alert you to a fever - it also beeps if fever is detected. Expensive but I'm liking it...
