Product Description

The long overdue first UK release of the influential 80's synth techno pop duo Vicious Pink and their self titled album plus bonus tracks. The album was originally released internationally in 1986 but it has never been available in the UK and it s the first time on CD worldwide. The CD features the nine tracks of the original album release and seven bonus tracks taken from the band's four singles during their spell with Parlophone. 'CCCan't You See' reached the top 30 in the US pop chart in 1987. The bonus tracks include four versions of the band's best known single 'CCCan't You See' - French Extended Mix, Re-mixx, 7" Version and 7" DJ Mix/Master Mix. It also features their 'Fetish' single - Extended Mix and the band's final single 'Take Me Now' - Extended Mix and it's 12" B/side 'I Confess' from 1985. This release has been made with the full co-operation of Brian Moss - one half of Vicious Pink. Brian has supplied rare photographs, press cuttings, gig flyers for inclusion within the CD booklet. Brian Moss has written sleeve notes for the album. The CD booklet features many of the original sleeves + full UK discography. Vicious Pink - Brian Moss and Josephine Warden hail from Leeds and emerged from the vibrant local music scene in the early 1980's. The duo started as backing vocalists for Soft Cell. The band's first guise was as Vicious Pink Phenomenon. The band released two singles 'My Private Tokyo' on the Mobile Suit Corporation (Phonogram) in 1982 and 'Je T'Aime' on Warehouse Records in 1983 resulting in a major record deal with Parlophone Records. The band shortened their name and went on to record with respected producer Tony Mansfield. The band released 4 singles with 'CCCan't You See' enjoying a 2nd release in 1985 after its original release in 1984. The band enjoyed cult status rather than commercial success. The band made music for the clubs and enjoyed widespread support on dance-floors either side of the Atlantic. This seminal collection of the band's work is a great example of the emerging electronic movement within the UK in the early 1980's.

Vicious Pink were one of those outfits that were never really destined for mainstream chart success, and instead intentionally opted for specialist club audiences. However their classic French Extended Mix of "Cccant You See" made it onto a mix tape a mate leant me during a working vacation pre Uni, and that was the only track I played over and over. Later on I managed to hunt down "Fetish/Spooky" and the not-so-good "Take Me Now", by which time the duo had effectively split. There was quite a lot of hype around their 'live' appearances, but that passed me by. Until now their only compilation album was on Canadian LP or cassette, so many thanks to Cherry Pop for getting the rights, a nice digital remaster, and Brian's obviously enthusiastic approval/contribution.

Let's be honest, there are no epic songs here, but that's not the point. What the duo made were some very danceable a-sides and catchy b-sides, and the lightly risque nature, plus vocal delivery by Josephine, make for a highly enjoyable and kitsch experience!

The mastering sounds great, no evidence of vinyl rips, and the liner notes are really worth a read (no mention of Razormaid though, whose early 12" re-edit for DJs gave "Cccan't You See" a real push on the US Club scene). Some new photos too.

Highlights for me, aside from the singles, are "Always Hoping", "I Confess" and the instrumental "8:15 To Nowhere".

The album proper finishes with the Bert Bevan (usually uncredited) Exxx-tended Re-Mixxx, and then we have the bonus mixes and b-side. For some reason we don't get the 12" Dub of "Cccan't", but we do get the rather odd DJ/Master Mix - personally I think an instrumental version would have relieved the risked monotony of so many remixes a bit, but maybe the master tapes were not up to it.

I never had this album when it was released originally. I only had the 12"ers of CCCan't you see and Fetish. I loved them! I was positively surprised over this CD, really good + very good sound! And I love
Tony Mansfield's production, he is a hero:-)

Great to see - at last - a CD issue from these underdogs of the UK's 80s electronic scene, with some bonus mixes included. Of course, most early electronica/synthpop from the 80s was new and experimental, sometimes primitive, very underground-sounding and sometimes with weird or dodgy vocals. Vicious Pink (great name!) fit the bill and had some club play with Cccan't You See, which is included here in several versions. No mention, though, of American promo service Razormaid, whose re-edits of Cccan't You See (after it had become a forgotten bargain bin flop) helped give the track new life on dancefloors and was how I came to be aware of the band's existence. Listening to five successive mixes of Cccan't You See may prove too much for some, but at least they are included (though other versions have been omitted). Mastering is clean and pristine though quite loud and with a fair bit of compression. Essential for music collectors and for fans of the 80s synth sound, but probably with little appeal outside that market.
