Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records announced today the signing of a worldwide deal with legendary American rock outfit Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band is already at work in Nashville recording a new album to be released later this year. This will be the first set of new studio material since 2003’s Vicious Cycle.

Like a bottle of vintage wine, Lynyrd Skynyrd continues to improve with age. This, their first studio album for three years, is brimful of catchy tunes delivering Skynyrd's trademark sound with energy and panache.

This year, celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of their first LP, 'Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd', the band have assembled a collection of infectious ballads and toe-tapping rockers certain to please fans old and new.

Lead singer, Johnny Van Zant has never sounded better. On 'Red, White and Blue' - a huge hit on US radio - he whips up patriotic fervour with an emotional expression of nationalistic pride.

Elsewhere, pianist Billy Powell is in sparkling form particularly on 'Sweet Mama', belting out honky tonk rhythms with a vengeance.

Rickey Medlocke and Johnny Van Zant share vocal duties on 'Pick 'Em Up', that opens in a blaze of horns. It's a tale of life on the road

Over the years Skynyrd have been bedevilled by misfortune and, unfortunately, tragedy continues to stalk the band. During the recording of Vicious Cycles, bassist Leon Wilkeson passed away. 'Mad Hatter' is a poignant and heartfelt tribute to his memory.

Kid Rock features on the closing track, which is a raucous reworking of the Skynyrd classic, 'Gimme Back My Bullets'.

'Vicious Cycle' is a testimony to the band's enduring appeal and is an excellent addition to their formidable arsenal of songs. As they prepare for a lengthy US tour, Skynyrd have added another triumphant chapter to their glorious history.

This album marks Lynyrd Skynyrd's 30 year anniversary, and does not disappoint in any way for lynyrd skynyrd fans. After the massive success of 'Freebird' all those many years ago, and with a lot of band members unfortunately gone to a better place, Johnny, Ronnie's brother, succesfully manages to hurl the new image Lynyrd Skynyrd into a progression of their older work. The album starts with 'Thats How I Like It' which is much heavier than any stuff I've ever heard from them. For the tradionalists amongst you out there, this may be a bad thing, but for the other people who like to move forward and other youngsters like myself, this is a brilliant new sound. Johnny's rougher voice certainly adds a hard edge to their music whilst Gary Rossington still provides the guitar brilliance that made Lynyrd Skynyrd a household name in the seventies. Other favourites of mine include 'Pick 'Em Up' and 'The Way', whilst 'Red, White and Blue' (A Patriotic American song - 'Different' lyrics) starts off slowly but finishes magnificently. The letdown for me is 'All Funked Up', which is a little too heavy for my liking, but could be liked if you are into that sort of thing. The album is not all modern, though, with songs such as 'Hell or Heaven' and 'Crawl' giving an 80's rock feel (They still work, though). Usually, towards the end of an album, 'filler' tracks can let it down, but 'Vicious Cycle' finishes just as strong with 'Jake' and a 6-minute 'Life's Lesson'. 'Lucky Man' has a more acoustic sound to it and a re-make of their old song 'Gimme Back My Bullets', featuring Kid Rock, certainly finishes off the album superbly and shows just how much they have progressed over the years. This album has helped me to convert my friends to the Skynyrd side and has pretty much constantly been in my CD player for the past few months. You MUST buy this album. Fantastic.
