Product Description

Amanda Harrington is a Dublin prostitute, working independently with her friend Marna Galloway, in a rented apartment on Mount Street. They see themselves as a cut above, having put the world of pimps and violence behind them.

But then they are busted and given a royal dressing down by a disapproving female judge – much harder to tolerate than the hefty fine incurred.

And things soon take a serious turn for the worse. Sandy Walsh, a colleague, has been discovered brutally murdered in her apartment. Finding Amanda’s mobile number on Sandy’s coffee table, soon the detectives are back on her trail, hoping she can help with the investigation.

Meanwhile, a serial killer is on the loose, targeting prostitutes ... Amanda and Marna are about to discover just how vulnerable they are.

Bringing this world to life as never before, Arlene Hunt’s debut thriller is a riveting, authentic read from a remarkably fresh and distinctive new voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vicious Circle review, 5 May 2004
This review is from: Vicious Circle (Paperback)
I picked up this book in Easons in Dublin hoping for a reasonable read from a new Irish author. I have to say I have never read anything like this from a female crime writer, Irish or otherwise. I'm normally quite a slow reader but I flew through this book.

Vicious Circle is a very dark, violent story of a serial killer stalking prostitutes in Dublin. The main characters, Amanda and Marna, are call girls working for themselves in a leased apartment, and you can feel the menace enveloping them as the book progresses, not only from the killer and the police who are desperate to catch him, but also from 'Tricky', a despicable, nasty pimp who Amanda used to work for. As much as the killer he becomes a focus for the violence and terror in the book.

There's real life to the characters the author has created, and she has made Dublin an atmospheric backdrop for the story itself. You can feel the cold, the rain, the oppressive skies. As a Dubliner myself I enjoyed the way she described various locations (albeit with a touch of artistic licence). We're used to reading about these kinds of stories taking place in London or New York or LA or other locations around the world. It's nice to know that we have a writer who can describe the seedy side of Dublin so well.

It's an exceptionally well written debut novel, hard to put down and has an ending I never saw coming, which is always great.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 26 Oct 2004

This review is from: Vicious Circle (Paperback)
This was a book I meant to purchase months ago when it was released and there was a fair bit of publicity for it, but for various reasons, time mostly, I didn't get around to it. Last weekend I rectified that and I'm glad I did. You can all see the synopsis and the basic outline of the story on this page and the first reviewer has hit the nail right on the head when he says it's atmospheric and dark. It really is. The characters have real depth and all the way through there is this feeling that something really bad could happen to the main protaganists at any time.

What I especially liked about Vicious Circle was the feeling at the end that we hadn't been handed a formulaic 'tidy up the loose ends, happy ever after' finale. You're left feeling for the characters and although it doesn't seem to be the sort of book that would have a sequel there's definitely a desire to know what happens to them in the future. It's also nice to see a female Irish writer that hasn't followed the lead of Maeve Binchy or Marian Keyes with romantic slush. They're ten a penny, this is original stuff.

Top marks from me.

This is a great police procedural.

Her characters, plotting, pace, dialog is everything you want and hope for in a book.

She'll grab you from the first page to the last.
