Product Description

Transfer function form, zpk, state space, modal, and state space modal forms. For someone learning dynamics for the first time or for engineers who use the tools infrequently, the options available for constructing and representing dynamic mechanical models can be daunting. It is important to find a way to put them all in perspective and have them available for quick reference.

It is also important to have a strong understanding of modal analysis, from which the total response of a system can be constructed. Finally, it helps to know how to take the results of large dynamic finite element models and build small MATLAB® state space models.

Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS answers all those needs. Using a three degree-of-freedom (DOF) system as a unifying theme, it presents all the methods in one book. Each chapter provides the background theory to support its example, and each chapter contains both a closed form solution to the problem-shown in its entirety-and detailed MATLAB code for solving the problem.

Bridging the gap between introductory vibration courses and the techniques used in actual practice, Vibration Simulation Using MATLAB and ANSYS builds the foundation that allows you to simulate your own real-life problems.

Features

  • Demonstrates how to solve real problems, covering the vibration of systems from single DOF to finite element models with thousands of DOF
  • Illustrates the differences and similarities between different models by tracking a single example throughout the book
  • Includes the complete, closed-form solution and the MATLAB code used to solve each problem
  • Shows explicitly how to take the results of a realistic ANSYS finite element model and develop a small MATLAB state-space model
  • Provides a solid grounding in how individual modes of vibration combine for overall system response

For an engineer who deals with vibrations and has access to matlab software, this book covers the main problems. For me, this book is written by engineers for engineers thinking the golden rule in mind: "I don`t want to dig into my lecture notes again, I need a simple answer". Critical information can be found in bold letters, which makes it easier to follow the subject. Everything in the book is supported with a Matlab code. I have to say that I was a little bit worried before getting this book because I didn`t know how much examples or code was included for Matlab, but the quantity and quality is satisfactory. I can not comment on Ansys, since I don`t have access to that software, however it is nice to have some basics about FEA in the book. I liked this book because you can also find comments on how to interprete the results like the real life observable motion of complex eigen frequencies.

This book is a rule of thumb to people who want to have quick and easy access of programing in the vibration analysis field and is a very step-by-step way to develop your skills in this subject. I recomend it to everybody!

This is a very to-the-point book for engineers who need sound techniques for doing free and forced response problems in flexible structures. The author takes a 3-dof system with masses, springs, and dampers all the way from the long hand equations of motion, through symbolic S-domain Laplace transform matrices, and into Ansys-computed eigenvectors. All the way through, full symbolic solutions, Matlab code, and Ansys input decks are given with outputs. No "left as an exercise for the reader" stuff here. He makes it clear how the techniques extend into higher order flexible (many nodes) structures and multi-input/multi-output systems. Easy to read, clear explanations - but probably best for readers who have already seen this stuff in their college days but need a single point of reference. It combines the important bits from the courses in statics, dynamics, differential equations, linear algebra, and numerical methods into one book.
