* There have been several attempts to chronicle the group's years on the OKeh label, but most have overlooked the tracks that collectors actually want, in favour of the many standards that the group cut during their five-year tenure with OKeh.
* This being a Kent release, they have ditched virtually all of the latter and aimed the package directly at those who've been dancing to their great floor-fillers since the 60s.
* Included are the A-sides of almost all of the Vibrations' OKeh and Epic 45s, plus as many of the B-sides as they could fit in - and, as a bonus, they also feature five previously unissued up-tempo cuts from the mid 60s, which include songs by soul legends Curtis Mayfield, Eugene Record of the Chi-Lites and Van McCoy.
* Here are `Cause You're Mine' (in stereo, and more than half a minute longer than the 45), `Gonna Get Along Without You Now', `End Up Crying', `Soul A Go-Go' and many others, newly remastered from the original tapes and sounding better than ever...

A much needed overview of a classic soul group,
By
This review is from: Vibrating Vibrations: The OKeh and Epic Singles 1963-1968 (Audio CD)
The Vibrations started in the doo-wop era but transitioned through the early 1960s soul-ballad style into a dance soul powerhouse in the mid to late 1960s. Although first on Chess Records they only had success there with the 'Watusi' novelty dance pop crossover and follow-ups. It was upon arriving at Chicago's 'Okeh Records' that their classic sides would be recorded.
There they recorded uptempo orchestral dance soul that would have thousands of British dancers stomping the crumbling dancehalls of the north and midlands throughout the 1970s and ever since. Okeh had a lush, shimmering orchestral sound married with a muscular rhtyhtm section that created perfect Northern Soul. Kent have already released two definitive CDs of Okeh that all soul fans will want. There was also a good compilation by Sony called 'It's Okeh Up North' which is now deleted. However The Vibrations produced a great body of work that deserves to be heard together. Thankfully this set avoids the ballads and focusses on the dance music that British soul fans adore. Here we have all their classics 'End Up Crying', 'Gonna Get Along Without You', 'Soul A-Go Go', 'Finding Out The Hard Way' and of course the stomping, infetious 'Cause You're mine' here in an extended, stereo mix (you'll also want the original found on the 'Wigan Casino Soul Club' CD at best quality). The CD doesn't include the slightly later dance soul hit 'Surprise Party For Baby' they recorded as The Vibrating Vibrations sadly which is odd given the CD's title referencing it. This song may be found on Goldmine's 'Golden Torch Revisited' CD instead. However this is a near-definitive overview with the usual Kent high quality sound and extensive sleeve notes. There are some excellent additional tracks to the hits which are every bit as good and provide a welcome extension to many soul fans experience of their music. Another must have purchase from Kent who really do understand their market and produce the best quality CDs around in the soul reissue area. A most welcome release.
