Product Description

"Via Plana" is not just another random collection of unseen exercises, presented to the student in the optimistic hope that somehow, they will muddle through and absorb some of the finer points of Latin grammar along the way. With a new approach, "Via Plana" systematically presents the major features of advanced Latin grammar and then offers sixth-formers and undergraduates a 'smooth road' to fluency via a structured series of exercises, primarily translation-passages extracted from major Latin authors, focussing specifically on each grammar feature in turn and graduated in difficulty to match the students' increasing level of ability.

This is an exceedingly useful book for those studying Latin and 'A' level and beyond. Eleven grammatical constructions are dealt with, with ample practice provided for those doing A/S level, then A2 level, then the first, second and third undergraduate years. Firstly there is a detailed explanation of the point, complemented by charts and examples. Then follow various exercises/translation passages from Latin authors graded for the five levels. One is made to think and reason. In the introductory pages there is advice on how to make one's own vocabulary book and a glossary of technical terms. There is , however, no vocabulary section and some could find this a disadvantage. It is a challenging book and should help students gain command of the language.

Very good for grammar 20 Feb 2011

Format:Paperback
I bought this because I'd been told I had to for a uni class this term. Initially rather resented having to buy a book of translation passages, but actually it's quite a useful book, better than most I've used before. The translations are arranged with sections explaining the grammar in between them, which makes it more likely that you will revise the grammar before doing the work than if it's in a separate book. Good, clear explanations too, with the essential info and then the more intricate exceptions to rules/difficult bits.

Brilliant 7 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
The aim of this book is to build up your ability to translate unseen, unadapted Latin into English, and in this in my opinion it largely succeeds.

Each chapter introduces a grammatical concept for you to revise and then gives several passages to translate, going from just below AS level to university standard. The author also gives hints about how to translate difficult bits of the passages with notes underneath and also by putting certain words into bold. This makes it more useful for students like me who are self-studying.

I can't comment on the book's usefulness for unversity students; I bought to in order to prepare for A2 and a university entrance exam, and so far I can't fault it.
