Product Description

This Swedish band was formed in 1989 by IT, mainly known for his dark band Abruptum, (which was signed to DSP, the label of ex-Mayhem guitarist Euronymous) and his heavy presence in the Scandinavian black metal scene in the late 80's and early 90's. Opthalamia was a land of pure fantasy created by IT and the songs are connected to stories based around this fantasy-world. The line-up on 'Via Dolorosa' featured IT (Tony Särkkä) then of Abruptum, with Legion, (ex-Marduk), on vocals. Also appearing on the album was Emil 'Nightmare Industries' Nodtveidt , currently with highly successful Swedish gothic industrial metallers Deathstars. The band line-up is completed by Winter, drummer for Swedish death metallers Edge of Sanity. The album was recorded late 1994 at "The Opthalamia Studios". It was produced by the band and engineered by Dan Swano (Katatonia/Opeth) and released 1995. "Via Dolorosa' also includes a cover of the Mayhem classic 'Deathcrush'" Tracks: INTO – UNDER OPHTHALAMIAN SKIES – TO THE BENIGHTED / BLACK AS SIN, PALE AS DEATH – AUTUMN WHISPERS / AFTER A RELEASING DEATH – CASTLE OF NO REPAIR (PART II) / SLOWLY PASSING THE FROSTLANDS – A WINTERLANDS TEAR / VIA DOLOROSA / MY SPRINTNIGHTS SACRIFICE / OPHTHALAMIA / THE ETERNAL WALK (PART III) / NIGHTFALL OF MOTHER EARTH – SUMMER DISTRESS / OUTRO – MESSGAE TO THOSE AFTER ME – DEATH EMBRACE ME (PART II) / BONUS TRACKS : A LONELY CEREMONY / THE ETERNAL WALK / DEATHCRUSH

Beautiful album 23 Jun 2006
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This has always been one of my favorite black metal (can you call it that?) albums. Granted, it's not perfect, but I gave it 5 stars since it's been a constant presence in my CD player for about 9 years. The only negative comment I can make is that it might be a little repetitive, but that doesn't bother me too much. The vocals (provided by Legion, former Marduk vocalist) are great and harsh, and stand in stark contrast to the music, which could not in the least be described as black metal. The riffs are more in the vein of melodic Black Sabbath, mostly consisting of single string, often blues-based melodies. The riffs seem to meander all over the place, but always maintain the same motif. It's rather simple, but quite unique and beautiful.

Original "black metal" 23 Mar 2010
By Carl Liljeberg - Published on Amazon.com
"It" once described this album as "black metal as if played in the 70s".

I totally agree. Melodic, progressive, long songs (and titles!).
This album is totally unique. Either you love it or hate it.

If you expect traditional black metal, stay away from this album.

This is not music for the faint hearted, or for the trend chasers... This is dark, black metal at it's finest, and Ophthalamia at the top of their game.

Behold Ophthalamia, So Fearsome in its might..... 12 Sep 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
So begins the majestic intro to a great Black Metal CD. This band includes It from Abruptum, and Pre-Marduk Legion.(Marduk fans, this is NOTHING like Marduk, it is slow, Atmospheric, beautiful, with no brutality whatsoever.) Yet this is what makes the cd so great. I listen to this whenever i want to relax and just be by myself ,alone, in a world of imagination. Fans of Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Fatal Embrace, and Naglfar will like this cd. This is also a great introduction to the Swedish B.M. scene. So if you are a B.M. fan, you should own this.

pure dissapointment 11 Mar 2003
By Nikolaos Gr. - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this cd few months after its release. I knew three things about it.First: members from abruptum/marduk (though i didn't like these bands much, i took that as a "quality insurance" because i respect their work)
Second:slow atmospheric doom/black metal, and Third: i read somewhere "in the style of Katatonia" (they hadn't released brave murder day yet). This one was the description i waited for!I bought the cd without second thought.
That was it...i made many attempts to listen to the whole cd but in vain...it was just unbearable. Indeed slow doom/black metal, but the most atonal and uninteresting riffs, mediocre vocals and as for the atmosphere i "found" it only in the poetic titles and the well-looked-after artwork and cd cover. A true dissapointment.
