Arcanum is a fabulous piece of music, astonishingly well performed and beautifully recorded.
Ezequiel Viñao was unknown to me before I took a plunge on this one, based upon the snippets available for sampling on these pages and across the internet from the parent company - BIS.
An earlier reviewer leads you towards the possible linkages with other modern composers. But I can imagine this sitting comfortably alongside Early Music Collections, World Music Collections or collections of Avant-Garde rock.
There is a very spare but luminous texture with small combinations of instruments and an ethereal soprano who (for me) delivers music that knocks several shades of spots off the ubiquitous Gorecki. Thanks Jennifer Youngdahl and thanks to the specially assembled group of instrumentalists who combined for this recording.
If there was such a thing as divine intervention this music should become a modern classic. Does Classic fM have to adopt one of the movements for this to take place? How sad if that were true!
