doesn't work well for me 25 Aug. 2011

The USB charger allows using the camera while it is powered through USB (other USB chargers don't seem to allow that). It is useful, for example, for recording a drive, in combination with the windshield mount.

While that sounds nice in theory, in practice it doesn't work so well. First, while this may charge the camera when it is off (I didn't try), it doesn't charge it while it is recording; in fact, the battery seems to be draining slowly if you're recording even if it is plugged into the charger. In order to use the USB charger, you need to leave the back of the camera open; that makes it difficult to push the on/off button (you need a pen or paperclip), and it also makes it difficult to remove the camera from the car mount.

In the end, it kind of works: you can record for about 8h at a time. But it's a fiddly and complicated experience.

Works as expected 18 April 2011

After initially being sent the wrong item I ordered again and received the correct cable.

Nothing really remarkable as it works as expected with no surprises, good or bad. The cable is nice and long and allows you to power (or charge) the Contour camera while recording, which is something a regular USB cable won't do. I used the cable along with my Contour GPS camera to record an off road trip in the west Texas desert and it worked like a charm. I haven't had good luck with the batteries for my Contour GPS so I recorded the trip with the battery removed to prevent any issues with overcharging shortening the life of the battery.

If you are in the car and need to record for awhile I highly recommend this along with the Contour 2800 Windshield Mount by Panavise.
Special [Record time] and [Battery charge time] power supply 31 Oct. 2014
By John Willis - Published on Amazon.com

This is the "original" ContourRoam HD automotive [record time] and [battery charge time] power supply.

The wiring of the original ContourRoam cameras featured the ability to both [record] while it is being charged or simply [charge] the internal battery while it was turned off.

Beware! The New ContourRoam chargers and generic USB chargers do not have the extra wiring in the cable to [alert] the camera that this charger can be used [both] as a runtime power source as well as a battery charging source.

The charger is solidly made and does not feel like its going to fall apart. In fact contrary to some other autochargers I have owned the tip does not appear like it can be removed or taken apart. I have seen some that have a washer like collar which can be unscrewed and a fuse or other type of connector is inserted under the tip. This does not have that design.

Short of cleaving it in two or rough handling I don't see how this charger could be disassembled.

The wiring is ample with at least four feet possibly more.

At the end is the simple USB mini connector.

The design of the original ContourROAM cameras has a laydown trap down in the back and there is no way to insert the power connector and close the door at the same time, so it has to be left open for the duration of the record time or battery charging time.

With the ability to by-pass the limitations of the record time possible on the internal battery, and the ContourROAMs ability to take time lapse snapshots in high resolution and composite a movie. A nine hour drive was doable with this charger.

I use this with my original ContourROAM HD action camera.

I've found these disappearing from the marketplace and especially rare to find elsewhere. I had to go through two online dealers to get one as they checked their inventory to find they were often out of stock.

This car charger lets you recharge the cameras' battery in between the action without having to have take a computer/lap top where ever you go.

Just like it says in the description.

Works great. I use it to power my roam as a dash cam.
