4.0 out of 5 stars First time breeding 10 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
After deciding to put my mare in foal (first time ever for me, 3rd time for her) I was looking for a book that would cover the basics of everything I needed to know about breeding and mare and foal care/management. This book is great, don't be put off by it being a veterinary guide as it isn't hard to read at all and it is split up into very manageable chapters and subject headings. It has set my mind at ease as I am now aware of all the complications I could encounter (but hopefully won't) through my mare's preganancy and subsequent birth of foal, and also foal health post birth. A great reference book to have whether you are a novice or a pro!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a good book, but your vet may have different advice! 12 Jun 2000
By J. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a pretty informative book, but I found that there is still some basic information that is not mentioned. For example my vet said a 3-week heat cycle for a mare's first March heat is not unusual. The book never mentions it. It also doesn't say anything about dealing with a virgin stallion. My vet had different advice than they did on washing the stallion. Since he maintains a stud, I trust his judgement. It is still informative however and we'll have to see how the foaling part goes. Just wish it had more information in certain areas. It would have saved me a $70. trip to the vet for something that is normal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative! 12 Sep 2006
By T. Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Great Book! Very informative. Goes into good detail of every aspect but not too detailed that you have a hard time understanding it. I have purchased a few books on the topic as I have experienced some unusual situations with my horse breeding program and found it to follow right along with my vets advice and information on many of them. For the money, this is by far the best book I have purchased yet on horse breeding.
5.0 out of 5 stars Easy read and a great reference book for foaling. 9 Aug 2013
By Naomi AK - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Love this book, covers all the basics and exactly what I was looking for. Great for first time breeders or a reference for those of us who haven't bred in a while.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for breeder and horseman. 25 Jan 2013
By Crab R. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This easy reader is truly a nice one for your collection.
An informative book that does bring the basics knowledge of horse breeding in a very understandable language.
You don't have to be a vet in order to understand the world of "horse breeding", thus anyone interested will be able to read and understand all of what is written.
