Product Description

'It's an engaging account of the situations she encounters where the humans are often more problematic than the animals, particularly the guys who want to know where the real vet is.' (Irish Independent)

'Lively sense of humour, and a pleasant, easy-going writing style. Animal lovers will be well-pleased with her pacy anecdotes' (Irish Examiner)

'This book is just hilarious. Suffice to quote the story of Gillian being called out to tend a guard dog called Rambo, who 'could best be described as a cross between a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Rottweiler, with a bit of German Shepherd thrown in for good measure'. When she nervously approaches the giant beast in his kennel, the diagnosis was obvious. 'Rambo was stoned'. It emerged that the vigilent guard dog had chased off a drug dealer -- then consumed the prohibited substances abandoned in the persuit. This is Gillian Hick's first book, but will no doubt be the first of many in the James Herriot mould.' (Countryman)

Product Description

The Hair-Raising Adventures of an Irish Vet.

Whether castrating horses in Dublin's inner city or dehorning cattle in the wilds of Wicklow, rescuing mangled cats from mongrels or tending to stoned guard dogs, vet Gillian Hick's sense of humour never deserts her in this engaging account of the challenging situations she encounters in the course of her work as a newly qualified veterinary surgeon.

Not only does she have to deal with the animals and their ailments, but she also has to contend with the perils of matchmaking mothers and macho farmers -- not to mention the guys who want to know 'where is the real vet?'

Vet on the Loose is a candid, wry look at modern- day Veterinary practice. A hilarious insider's guide to all the funny things that can happen with animals and their owners. The most amusing and entertaining book since James Herriott's....

I loved this book so much I have bought it for a number of people since! It gives a different insight into the world of a young vet and her trials and tribulations through her first year of practice. At times hilarious and others thoughtful and emotional - each chapter is vividly written so you can almost imagine yourself there. Well written and difficult to put down it is highly recommended - and I hope there is another in the pipeline!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful 26 Mar 2008
By David Cranson VINE VOICE
Rich in warmth, love, gravitas and brilliant story-telling. This is a wonderful book detailing the ups and downs of the first year in vetinary practice of Gillian Hick. It shows the dedication and patience that is required to work with animals, but even more so, their owners - and indeed other vets(!)

Easy to read, very difficult to put down, the books travels from inner-city Dublin to the Irish country-side and back again. the characters - both human and animal - jump from the page and come alive in your imagination as if you are there watching over her shoulder.

A fantastic addition to the canon of real-life books and vetinary medicine books in particular.

Very, very much recommended!!

4.0 out of 5 stars vet on the loose 4 Nov 2010
Thoroughly enjoyed this, very easy read, very entertaining. Truelife stories of an Irish Lady vet, you would think it was a fiction novel as the stories unfold, but you get a feel for her life and how she has developed. There are some very funny bits and a very sad and touching story which struck a cord with me and I shed a few tears. Nice ending, would recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't want to put it down! 2 Jan 2008
This books is a must for animal lovers and about as important for vet students as a copy of Black's Veterinary Dictionary! I'm half-way through now and really don't want to finish it!! Thanks Gillian!

2.0 out of 5 stars Vet on the Loose 28 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Found it a rather boring read. I feel more humour could have been written into the stories (even if that meant the true story was a little bit enhanced) to make the read more enjoyable. Easy reading though.

4.0 out of 5 stars we'll written and both amusing and sad at times
Really enjoyed this book. Not exactly a James Heriott but given time and more experiences it could be. Hard to put down once started.
