Book Description

19 Aug 2010
Vet Among the Pigeons continues the story of veterinary surgeon Gillian Hick's escapades among the animal population. Although by now, not such a green graduate, the animals and their owners keep her challenged in a way never described in the text books. While based in a mixed animal practice in Wicklow, Gillian also travels regularly to inner city Dublin to work in the Bluecross animal welfare clinic but finds that sometimes the two lives are hard to combine. From dairy cattle to turkey cocks, from lofty equines to the not so lofty, from six foot snakes to snuffling hedgehogs, Gillian encounters it all as she struggles to improve her own skills and justify her place in the veterinary profession, along with the help of an ever expanding young family of her own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great follow up 7 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a wonderful follow up to "Vet on the loose" I found the book very easy to read and Gillian has a wonderful writing style. It give both a "lead you by the hand"insight not only as life as a Vet, but also as a family women. The book made me laugh out loud-hilarious in places. Great read or gift for all interested in "real life" stories. I have read all Mike Pannett's books which in fact brought my attention to "Vet on the loose" I hope for a 3rd.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and honest 29 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed Gillian's first book and I was hoping this one would live up to its predecessor. Happy to say I wasn't at all disappointed.

Not only is the writing entertaining and accessible, but it is also a very balanced and honest account of a vet's working life. It must have been very tempting to write only about the success stories - the cases that go exactly to plan and give the impression that the author is some kind of wonder-vet. But Gillian consistently writes with humility and modesty, and the book is all the richer for her willingness to acknowledge those times when she felt out of her professional depth and in need of help and guidance from more experienced colleagues.

It's another great read - I just hope the author has another in the pipeline.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vet among the pigeons 10 Jan 2014
By Clare O'Beara TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
Sequel to memoir Vet on the Loose.

Mainly in this account I liked the contrast between the practice in Wicklow and inner-city Blue Cross evening service. Gillian helps out after having her first baby, and returns to work with a bang as people queue outside the mobile clinic.

Quite a lot of the stories are sad and end with the death of a cow or dog, which is why I can't recommend it to the tender, but there is a very nice episode with a young lad in a halting site determinedly caring for his piebald filly foal. We also come away with a view of equine vets as very snobbish and dismissive of women, and keen to spend an afternoon watching slides of endoscopy although there was no such equipment in Ireland at the time. There's a very funny piece where Gillian takes on a snake although she has a strong dislike of them and has to mind it for a week.

The writing is accessible and it is good for people to be reminded of how awkward and stressful the work can be for the vet, who is at the beck and call of the mobile phone at all hours.

I love Gillian Hick's books which make me smile. Each story is charming and a story in itself so you can read a chapter at a time and enjoy piecemeal. Good for holiday reading as it is light and refreshing if you love animals and their owners.
