Book Description

They thought themselves alone; abandoned, lost and without hope.

Then it arrived.

The crew of the WSA Pytheas drift helplessly towards the outer edge of the Solar System. Cut off from Earth and lacking any means of rescue, the ship continues its inexorable drift while the crew wait to die.

Then the sudden arrival of a mysterious object sparks a chain of events that could either extricate them from danger or cause their destruction.

Captain Marcus Keats, Navigation Officer Piedro Alvarez and ship biologist Dr Natalie McCarran must choose what and whom to trust as they struggle to understand the artefact’s purpose, and the new danger threatening to tear them apart.

More About the Author

Chris Roper lives in Brighton, England. Originally from Scotland, Chris moved south to study Philosophy at the University of Sussex, and has since attained a Certificate in Astronomy and Planetary Science from the Open University.

Chris started writing at a young age, freaking his teachers out with stories of vampires, monsters and vengeful spirits. When he finished university he chose to stay in Brighton and over the course of the last few years began cultivating his interest in writing again, remaining faithful to his love of stories that excite and kindle the imagination.

Chris's first novella - Vestige - was borne from a deep interest in the cosmos, and humanity's place in it.

It started off well but went rapidly downhill. Too much banal character analysis and background that just went on and on. The conflict between the characters occupied most of the book and became totally tedious. I started flicking through the pages looking for something interesting to happen. It was obvious the author had run out of ideas and the whole thing just petered out into a boring anti-climax.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 11 Jan. 2013

Really enjoyed this book. Brought home the horror of being trapped in space more than ACC's 2001 A Space Odyssey. Can't wait for more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing 28 April 2013

Good scene setting but characters a bit two dimensional. Can't see the reason for the complete turn round of feelings after seven years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant first book. 5 Sept. 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Chris has given us a snippet of what I'm sure can be a full novel. I was so engrossed in the characters and am desperate to find out more about them and where they came from and more importantly, more detail on how they got to the point where we meet them for the first time. His descriptions are vivid and well timed. A really good read and can't wait for another.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brave first step as a promising storyteller 3 Sept. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Three very different people adrift together at the edge of the solar system, with no hope of retrieval, facing a long and pointless fall into the oort cloud and certain death. But something's about to happen that puts their own epic tragedy into a much larger perspective ... An ambitious premise, developed with energy and imagination, and (hallmark of any decent sci-fi) a clear delight for exploring some of the basic human questions in a well drawn and unfamiliar setting - some fascinating characterisation, good pace and a confident narrative style with just a couple of tiny bumps. I consumed it between reading Altered Carbon and now Hyperion, and in that company it gave a good reckoning. So: a very neat package for a first outing. Buy it before it gets a sensible price tag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this 27 Sept. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a really good yarn, a pageturner. Well written with characters you care about, not too deep or techy so you don't have to be really into Scifi to enjoy it. Thoroughly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well written novel
Started well but got a bit far fetched even for a science fiction story. The last chapter was too unbelievable!

A bit of a slow burner this one with a thin ending. A great idea for a plot but predictable in the telling. I wouldn't recommend it to my friends.
