Review

The text is superbly organised, well written, and provides practical, specific treatment regimes. The case studies are cross referenced. Additionally, there is an appendix of diagnoses by page, and references following each chapter as well as a complete bibliography at the end of the book . . . This book provides a systematic approach to the dizzy patient, clinical detailed histories in a question and answer format that is easy to read, and treatment options. It is useful to both specialists and non-specialists from the level of medical student to balance disorder specialists. I highly recommend this book. (JNNP )

Product Description

This book uses a case-study approach to outline the field of dizziness and balance disorders. Written from the combined perspectives of a neurologist and a neurotologic surgeon, each case study describes history, physical examination, laboratory testing, differential diagnosis, and treatment. The text includes background material and 59 case studies, five of which concern multiple diagnoses, and ten of which address controversial issues. Vestibular Disorders spans the gap between textbook knowledge and the real world of caring with patients with dizziness.

excellent book for beginners 11 Mar 2003
By Chang Ta Ching - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I read the first edition twice and still decided to buy the second edition . Case study approach is the best way to learn .
You will never get tired of exploring the cases. You will have gross view of the vertiginous patients and learn differential diagnosis. Must read for beginners.

broad coverage, too many typos 28 Jan 2009
By Ira Pollack - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book seems to emphasize more neurology than ENT. There is probably a little too much emphasis on oddball causes of balance difficulty.

I also found a number of editing errors, with occasional confusion of which semicircular canal is involved, and whether there is increased or decreased activity. I don't think this detracts too much from the book, which is still a good review.

From a personal perspective, I would have appreciated more in-depth coverage of test utility. Test results are always mentioned in the cases, but there is little coverage of "pearls and pitfalls" in test interpretation. From experience in using VNG, I find that the results are frequently not straightforward.

This is a most useful text especially if you're new to the diagnosis and management of vestibular disorders. It's easy to read and understand and very applicable. I highly recommend it.
