I bought this album on tape when it first came out in 1987. It is the ONLY one I listen to over & over. I had to replace the tape with cd recently. U2's version of Christmas (Baby, please come home) is fantastic. I am an 80's music fan & all the classic artists are on here: Eurythmics, Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen, Alison Moyet, Run DMC etc, etc.

Best Christmas album ever this replaces a tape. Although on the CD I've just bought through Amazon Jon Bon Jovi isn't a Back Door Santa, he wishes every day was Christmas!

Most of these songs were specially recorded for this charity album and some of the performances are outstanding. It's hard to pick out highlights when there are so many great performances, but here are a few.

I love Madonna's cover of the Eartha Kitt classic, Santa baby. Do you hear what I hear was recorded early in Whitney Houston's career when I enjoyed her music. Santa Claus is coming to town is performed with great enthusiasm by the Pointer sisters.

Christmas (Baby please come home) is a superb cover of Phil Spector's classic song from his famous sixties Christmas album, on which it was performed by Darlene Love.

Although I've heard more different versions of Silent night than of any other song (Christmas or otherwise), I can say that the version included here by ex-Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks is among the best, if not the best, that I've heard.

Indeed, there's only one track that I'm not keen on. I've never been a rap fan so Christmas in Hollis by Run D M C does not appeal to me, but I can live with it.

I thought it would be useful to have a track listing for this excellent album.

On later pressings of the album, "Back Door Santa" was replaced with "I Wish Every Day Could Be Like Christmas", also by Bon Jovi. [On the CD, the track is "Back Door Santa".]

Also on later pressings of the album, a spoken introduction on The Pretenders' "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," presumably by a young child, was omitted. [It is still there on the CD.]

I love this CD. It has some of your traditional Christmas songs and some contemporary ones. I remember listening to this CD in Canada as a teenager (I'm now 41 and living in the UK) and was pleased to see it on Amazon.

Beware that if you order this (1987 release) of 'A Very Special Christmas' you will receive an MP3 of a completely different (dreadful) album, released in 2013 with the same title. I've just cancelled my order after speaking to disinterested amazon staff who didn't seem to know the difference, and couldn't tell me which version they would send in the post. Bring back local record shops!
