'Like reading an old Dick Francis novel - full of good humour and solid detection' Deadly Pleasures

Product Description

DI Charlie Priest is on gardening leave - the neighbours have complained about his weeds - when the call comes. Ghislaine Curzon, girlfriend of one of the royal princes, is in Heckley to open the Curzon Centre, a new shopping mall and conference facility. But as she reveals the commemorative plaque it looks like someone has got to it first, defacing it with a single obscene word in foot-high red letters. The visiting dignitaries are aghast and the chief constable insists on Charlie investigating the case. When the mayor of Heckley and driving force behind the construction of the controversial new mall is found murdered, killed by a single shot to the head, the investigation takes a deadly turn. It's going to take more than standard police procedure to crack this case.

It was with some trepidation I started to read this book. The negative comments had put me off for a while. However, although racehorses leave me cold I found myself enjoying the book. It was the usual mix of crimes, characters and personal banter. In the end I gave it four stars as I felt there was a 'spark' missing; it didn't quite fizz along as his other stories did.
Still worth a read if you are a Stuart Pawson fan.

Having just read Peter Robinson's 'Bad Boy' and found it disappointing, I was glad to turn to an author who seems to be keeping up standards, although it seemed quite difficult to get hold of the latest Charlie Priest story. Well written, topical and entertaining. Mr Pawson deserves every plaudit he gets.

Well worth the wait. 15 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
Yorkshire's hidden diamond, Stuart Pawson, just gets better and better. Newly released after a long publishing wait, I could have devoured this in a day but decided to treat it like a fine wine, reading in measured sips.
If you haven't read the exploits of the entirely likeable, funny, sometimes sassy Charlie Priest, of Heckley nick, the longest serving DI in Yorkshire, then you have indeed missed a treat and 12 other stories are ready and waiting for your discovery and delight. Pawson's writing is so good that you get well immersed right from word one and he manages to interweave multiple, entirely plausible plots within and niftily tie them all up by the end, with many strands so well crafted you don't see the conclusions coming.
Well done Stuart! Don't stop ! Keep 'em coming.
Your loyal readership.
