Reviews

The exclusive Very Best Of Time Team Digs 3–disc box set features the show's very best archaeological digs, as chosen by the team themselves. These include: the discovery of the huge Roman villa at Turkdean; the Anglo-Saxon treasures uncovered at Braemore; Time Team's adventures in the Caribbean; an investigation into a crashed spitfire from World War II; and the dig that no one will ever forget--the mysterious site at Llygadwy in Wales, where the archaeology seemed just too good to be true. This selection of the very best Time Team digs are introduced and reviewed by Tony and the Time Team.

Not often do we come across a quality educational tv show that both my son (6) and I enjoy. This dvd comes out when there isn't much on tv and provides a bit of 'quality time' on rainy days. We have purchased the entire released series and can't wait for the next one.

At first the idea of Archeology as entertainment seems far fetched. However, Tony Robinson and the Time Team crew have entertained and informed us since 1994. This collection of episodes contains the presenters' own personal favourites. These range across the whole spectrum - from Romans to Normans as well as the other usual suspects. However my favourite is the dig involving a Spitfire in France. There were still living connections with the event, including a half brother to the deceased pilot, which made the dig very poignant. For anyone interested in history, archeology and the science of archeology you cannot go past this collection. I would love to have every episode ever made. As these are not available this collection is the best alternative. Finally, for those of you who had a secret crush on Carenza Lewis this is an opportunity to see her at work again!

"Time Team" is a very successful Channel Four British television series which has been running since 1994.

Fronted by actor Tony Robinson, each episode features a team of specialists carrying out an archaeological dig over a period of three days, with Robinson explaining the process in layman's terms. The team varies from dig to dig but four professional regulars are:

Professor Michael Antony 'Mick' Aston, University of Bristol
Francis Manning Marlborough Pryor MBE, a British archaeologist
Phil Harding, full time archaeologist, Wessex Archaeology
Carenza Rachel Lewis, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and Access Cambridge Archaeology.

There is a great art and skill in making archaeology so thrilling and exciting it requires breathless running from trench to trench to capture the moment and Robinson plays his part so well. He is the "outsider", the non-specialist, the viewer in the programme and he makes good use of his role. This selection of the team's favourites has a wide range of historical periods and places and ther is something for everyone. If readers enjoy "Time Team", this will bring back the memories.

As well as individual digs, this programmes conveys a great deal of information about the science and skills of archaeology which can be transferred to any situation. Even if the three day time-scale brought in to dramatize the dig for television seems false, the digs are not.

I have been a fan of this series since Episode 1. I even watch the repeats on Sky TV every week night. So, when I saw this DVD - I couldn't resist it! In fact, having started to watch the DVD, I realised just how much the Sky TV repeats miss out, because of advert breaks! A definite must-have for "Time Team" nuts like me.

Those people who enjoy the weekly Time Team programs will be pleased with this selection.
The quality of the production leaves little to wish for. As an overseas viewer I have suffered from a lack of continuity of Time Team programs as my local TV station has higher priorities.
What would be even better than these 'best of' would be a series of DVD's going back to the first programs that never made it to Australia.
Here, in our high country 'history' goes back to the early nineteenth century and not much of the early settlers archaeology still exists.

Always loved Time Team and this was one of the few DVDs on the market. Would have preferred DVDs series by series but beggars can't be choosers!

Yes I know Time Team repeats are on more often than the news at the moment, but if you need your hit and simply cannot wait, then you'd do worse than pick this up. Hopefully some day the complete series will be released on DVD, until then get your Tony, Phil and Mick fix right here.
