It's a great collection of two improbable violinists. 27 Dec. 2013
By travel light and smiling - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Menuhin was classically trained, and wasn't comfortable at improvisation.
Grappelli was a jazz violinist and not replaceable. His wasn't a pose. He played violin, and he played jazz. He didn't read music.

The story is that when the two of them were approached with the idea of putting a record together, they both asked the same question: "Why would he want to play with me? He's so good". Total lack of ego.

The lack of ego shows itself in the pieces. It's not just Grappelli's territory, the jazz. Menuhin played some, too. What this meant was that someone had to transcribe Grappelli's riffs for Menuhin to play, and then Grappelli had to play the straight parts for Menuhin to add the jazz.

Cheek to Cheek begins as almost a minuet, moves astonishingly naturally into something more modern, goes flat out into Jazz, and then returns to and ends with a minuet. Yeah.

The little black dress of music. 1 Sept. 2013

Nothing like it, the best for listening to two masters playing in their own style and playing off each other--such a unique experience to guess when they trade off and then come together. A must for violin lovers--no, for all music lovers. Everyone I played it for thought it was a treat; from fiddler friends, Blues guitarists, non-musicians, and mother too! Even the friends who aren't big on Porter and Berlin songs didn't care, the performers made it timeless and took it into a era of their own--close your eyes, it is Midnight in Paris, you pick the club, the cafe; get intoxicated from the cool-hot-string-magnum--you can always take a taxi home. Little L
Fantastic Jazz violin by an unlikely pair. 16 Sept. 2014

This is a great CD combining Classic Menuhin with Jazz Grappelli playing Porter, Berlin, Gershwin, Kern etc. It probably shouldn't work but it does. All his life, Grappelli played second fiddle (pun intended) to Django Reinhardt's guitar based on the Quintette du Hot Club de France material but Stephane was fantastic. If you like Jazz and violin, this is a must.
Great combination 29 Aug. 2013

Grappelli and Menuhin. What an interesting combination. A little different than much Grappellis other recordings, but we love it and play it all the time. Almost every piece is a familiar song. Classic!
