I was quite excited when this collection of songs from Lobo first hit the shops, and although this is a nice collection of the music of Lobo, (and may very well feature said artist) I am pretty well convinced that these are not the original UK single releases, but more recent re-recordings.
Whilst I do not have a big problem with artists doing this, I just wish that they or their record label would clearly state that they are re-records on the packaging somewhere.
In the UK, 'Me and you and a dog named Boo' came out on Philips in 1971, and the eventual follow up, 1974's 'I'd love you to want me' appeared on Jonathan King's UK label .
I have got boxes full of artists attempts at re-recording their hits (usually to get round licencing problems, or to take advantage of more modern recording techniques). Some good, some far from good. To be fair this is one of the better examples, but if you are a purist and only the proper versions will do, I don't think that these are they......

Born Kent Lavoie, Lobo had three American top ten hits, these being Me and you and a dog named Boo (a novelty song, but brilliantly done), I'd love you to want me (a song he offered to the Hollies before deciding to release his own version after they wanted to change it and take half the songwriting royalties) and Don't expect me to be your friend. The first two of these were also huge hits in Britain. He had several other lesser American hits, but no more UK hits.
On this compilation you will find Lobo's big hits, some of his other great songs and his covers of the classic songs It doesn't matter anymore (Buddy Holly), End of the world (Skeeter Davis), Dream lover (Bobby Darin), Will you still love me tomorrow (Shirelles) and Let it be me (Everly brothers).
Lobo's style could variously be described as soft rock or folk-pop. Actually it was a mix of all these elements. If you like Bread, but you'd like something a bit folksier, Lobo may be just what you're looking for.

This album is packed full of easy listening tracks by a vastly under-rated artist. Those with memories of the seventies will instantly recognise Lobo classics such as 'Me and You and a Dog named Boo' and 'I'd Love You to Want Me'. These are supplemented by top class renditions of other Lobo-penned tracks such as 'Don't Tell Me Goodnight','A Simple Man' and 'Don't Expect Me to be Your Friend'. To round of a superb album, there are Lobo versions of standards such as Bobby Darin's 'Dream Lover' and Paul Anka's 'It Doesn't Matter Anymore'. The lyrics are fairly simple and straight-forward, but they presented in a melodic and pleasing way. All tracks are sung with emotion and feeling, making the listener immediately want to hear more by this artist.

Lobo is one of those talented artists from the Seventies that everyone has heard of, but can't place. His most famous hit was, "Me And You And A Dog Named Boo", a number one hit with a romantic breezy feel with simple chords and lyrics. "I'd Love You To Want Me" was also a big number with Robert Johnson guesting as back-up falsetto vocalist.

The rest of the album is a smart selection of love songs and low key poetic verses of the typical Top 40 genre, but presented extremely well. "A Big Red Kite" is masterful in it's simplicity and mood and "A Simple Man" contains Lobo's earmarked guitar work. A special selection is "Rings", a huge 1971 hit by the group Cymarron that Lobo sings with the same magic.

If you like one of the songs on this collection, you'll like them all. It's first rate seventies pop.

No offense to the artist as these are fine, classic pop staples included on here HOWEVER they are re-recordings & NOT THE ORIGINAL versions!!! ...just to give any future buyers a 'heads-up'!
If you are looking for Lobo's ORIGINAL VERSIONS of these classics, THIS IS NOT THE COMP FOR YOU...

To be honest bought the album for the great track I love you to want me , which is excellent , but not a great album by any means seems to have been re worked an lost something , shop around, possibly a better album by Lobo is knocking about somewhere.
