The most famous of these songs is the tongue-in-cheek It's hard to be humble. You either love or hate this song, but in any case it's not typical of the songs here.
Let's keep it that way, one of the three songs not written by Mac, was first recorded by Anne Murray. It was the title track of one of her late seventies albums and was intended to be a single, but that plan was dropped and You needed me became the single instead. Mac eventually had a country hit with his version of Let's keep it that way.
For me, the two outstanding songs here are Hooked on music and Texas in my rear view mirror. The first is about his musical inspiration and the second is about his attempt to make the big time. Of the other songs, I particularly like Rodeo clown and the affectionate You're my bestest friend. There is also a fine cover of Rodney Crowell's Shame on the moon.
Mac Davis never made it big as a singer, but this compilation is worth a listen if you enjoy country music of the era.
