The 1992 "The Complete" 2-CD set saw EMI release clean remastered versions of virtually everything the various incarnations of the band recorded for EMI between 1959 and 1966. Fans have mourned its deletion, copies turning up at ireegular times on auction sites from at least twice the original price and often more. The CD releases since have varied between well-thought out and sensible compilations by EMI to thrown-together efforts from third parties. Kidd/Pirates Fans can now get hold of the most comprehensive collection since that. This "Best Of" still packs in both sides of every single in chronological order plus many of the rare tracks from "Complete". Omissions include a few of the less essential 1964 aborted album tracks plus one or two other items, however most of these have appeared elsewhere. The most interesting inclusions are two instrumental tracks by the Pirates that see the light of day anywhere for the first time. "Spanish Armada" and "Popeye" are from 1963, recorded by the Green/Spence/Farley line-up before "I'll Never Get Over You" returned their leader to the top five the same year. The sound is full for just guitar/bass/drums and makes me wonder why more was not made of this line-up although to be fair the following year saw them cut a blistering 'solo' R&B 45 ("My Babe"/"Casting My Spell") at one take each track which are also included. This set easily represents the most comprehensive collection of this legendary UK singer and band since "Complete" - and at such a good price it cannot be faulted. Grab it while you can.

In "Please Don't Touch" and "Shakin' All Over", Johnny Kidd had two of the best ever British rock'n'roll records, arguably the latter was THE best. In spite of that, his chart success wasn't massive and the self-evident originality of those records didn't necessarily translate to more inventive stuff further down the line. An example of the latter was 1965's coupling of "Shakin' All Over `65" an unnecessary reworking complete with reedy organ, and a belated cover of the country-ish "Gotta Travel On", originally from the rather obscure Billy Grammer in 1959, but a song which certainly didn't play to Kidd's strengths. This was the sort of record which Kidd was putting out towards the end of his short career which was so unfortunately terminated by that car crash in `66.

This set gives us Johnny Kidd, not forgetting the Pirates, warts and all since it includes pretty well everything that they recorded even including such things as a recording of Jerry Lee's "Big Blon' Baby" which was recorded for a long deleted "Saturday Club" album. The set is also arranged in strict chronological order so there's a feel for the changing nature of pop and rock music from `59 through to `66. There's an argument that all of Kidd's significant work could be contained in an album of half the size of this but both the price and the comprehensive nature of this set make it attractive.

A few observations:

* Johnny only had one single released in 1959, the excellent "Please don't Touch", the rest were 1960 and on. This was the timeframe when interest in rock'n'roll seemed to be on the wane with many of the original big names not contributing for a variety of different reasons. Gene Vincent was one of the few originators who was still around. He was also in the UK a lot during the early 60's.

Johnny Kidd for me is the link between the classic rock and roll of the late 50's and the newer sound of the 60's "Merseybeat" groups. The bridge is the "Shot Of Rhythm And Blues/I Can Tell" 45 released in 1963 - just guitar, bass, drums and superb vocals from the guvnor himself.

He also wrote two of the best songs of the era with "Shaking All Over" and "Please Don't Touch".

This is a good "best of" collection which plays out in chronological order so you can hear the changing style of British rock and roll and r'n'b from the late 50's through to the mid 60's.

Some of the choices in material that he did might appear strange to us but Johnny always gave a good performance.

I am a massive fan of MerseyBeat music, and of course know and love Shakin' All Over. I also know and adore a few other songs from this abum such as Doctor Feelgood, I Just Want To Make Love To You, Some Other Guy, I'll Never Get Over You, A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues.

It was on the strength of these songs that I decided Johnny Kidd and The Pirates merited further investigation, and when I saw just what an extensive list of songs is on this album, I knew it was worth a try.

I am very glad I tried it as I love every song, as well as discovering songs I didn't realise I knew, ones I never knew and two previously unreleased songs.

It's classic Merseybeat and easy to listen to, learn the lyrics to, and sing along or even dance to. Brilliant overview of a brilliant, underrated band.

Some say early Billy Fury or early Cliff Richard were Britain's best and first Rock'n'Roll stars but I disagree. I do like Billy and Cliff. However Billy sounds like Elvis or Gene Vincent or others depending on the track and soon went mushy pop. Cliff was better earlier but also went mushy pop.
'Shakin' All Over' was like nothing the US had produced and 'Growl' and 'Please Don't Touch' again, are distinctively British (or perhaps fairer to say new). He also featured electric bass just before the British beat boom took off and,as the first reviewer has said, these CDs bridge the gap between Rock'n'Roll and Merseybeat.
Johnny and Cliff showed we could be as good as the yanks compared to early British bands being a poor and pale imitation of Bill Haley.
Billy and Cliff never sounded Merseybeat (they were pure soft pop by then) whereas Johnny Kidd did. Who came first - did he influence Northern bands or was he copying Liverpool bands?
I like both musics but prefer Rock'n'Roll by far. I also recommend 'Feelin' 'Please Don't Bring Me Down' 'Restless' and his superb cover of 'Linda Lou'.
I quite like Johnny Kidd's merseybeat styled numbers as they are still distinctive within that sound but what was he on when he shouted his way through 'Yes Sir That's My Baby'? I am astonished to read the liner notes state that this was intended to be an A side with 'Shakin' All Over the 'B' side!
Thank God they swapped the sides and of such things musical history is made!
If Johnny Kidd hadn't died so young he may not have had much more chart success but he would have made a good living touring the smaller clubs and the Rock'n'Roll circuit ready for the Rock'n'Roll revival of the 70s. Would he have been welcome at Hemsby - if not sod 'em!
