Not by any means definitive (it's not trying to be) but I personally enjoy the earlier recordings of JLH and this retrospective is perfect for that. All the tunes you want are here and more. Definitely worth a punt.

The sound on this cd is very poor, most of the tracks are not the best versions John made, he recorded most of his songs many times over the years just to earn some money, leaving a lot of crappy recordings behind, most of them on this CD probably. Better go for a different compilation to do right to John Lee Hooker's music, for instance The Definitive Collection on the Hip-O label.

From his very first through to his band-backed performences. Get it for an evolution of great tunes from the king of the boogy along with an imormative booklet on the tracks and John Lee Hooker himself.
