A definitive overview of a great soul singer,

Garland Green is one of those soul singers who never quite made it to wider public acclaim on a sustained basis but was still a fine soul singer with many quality songs.
He had a clean, appealing vocal style broadly similar with early Marvin Gaye but lacked the career management and label support to break through. This career overview from Kent covers his music from the mid 1960s through to the late 1970s. So his sound moves from slick Chicago styled soul through the late sixties crossover sound merging soul, funk, rock and country through to the sophisticated philly influenced disco soul of the mid to late 1970s. The album isn't presented chronologically so we get a mix of all these styles which makes for a varied and impressive listen. Many fans will buy the set for his Northern Soul plays such as 'It Rained 40 Days and Nights' (also recorded by Little Joe Cook) and 'Girl I Love You' which are uptempo, orchestrated dance soul of the finest quality. However the mid-to-late 1970s songs though less known by most are a great example of how the soul could infuse the shallow dance music of that era. Completists will find his other 1970s soul hits on the 'Soul of Spring' and 'The Spring Story' collections by Kent which include his novelty disco pop hit 'Bumpin' and Stompin''. As always Kent have gone back to the master tapes and offer a lush, rich sound with an excellent career overview in the sleevenotes. This set draws from six different labels to offer us a proper appreciation of a fine artist for the first time. It must have taken many months to put together but the listener gains from one of the best soul CDs in recent years. A must for all soul fans.

Garland Green never got the credit he was due. This collection is evidence of some great soul/R&B work. Definitely recommended.

Although, Garland is from the old school of music, this CD is the best. I enjoyed listening to Jealousy Kind of Fella. Do purchase the CD, you won't be disappointed.
