By Bob Sherunkle TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
At a bargain price, this gives you all the UK A-sides from 1966 to 1969 (with Sky Pilot sides 1 and 2 combined into one long track), plus Monterey.

Inside Looking Out and Don't Bring Me Down are classic mid-60s hard rock performances, the swansong of the disintegrating first Animals line-up. After the dubious solo Help Me Girl, When I Was Young and Good Times are a musical and lyrical transition into the realms of psychedelia.

San Franciscan Nights, Monterey and Sky Pilot remain fascinating pictures of some of the main features of hippiedom - love, peace and music plus anti-war protest - and the musicianship on these tracks is excellent. Monterey includes brief pastiches of several of the festival performers.

There are several cover versions. Ring of Fire and River Deep, Mountain High are excellent. The latter is the full 7-minutes plus version, with the middle a hilarious chanted invocation of Tina Turner. Gin House Blues is good, but less atmospheric than the Amen Corner versions; the rest are dispensable.

Some of the tracks on this collection are mediocre, but the good ones make up for it.

Eric Burdon has a very distinctive voice, soaked in the blues and matured in R&B and the Animals had a string of hits which made full use of his vocal abilities. This album was recorded after Eric had relocated to San Francisco and it combines his blues background with new, psychedelic and eastern influences.

And Burdon starts to get political too. Sky Pilot is an anti-war song and takes the unusual theme of questioning how padres can endorse the sending of young men (this is from the Vietnam War days) to go out and kill. Monterey is a joyous celebration of the music festival held in 1968. And San Franciscan Nights is a homage to his new home. As well as his own material, the band (which, amongst a frequently changing line-up, included Andy Summers - later with the Police - and the amazing Zoot Money) do excellent cover versions of Cash's Ring of Fire, Ike & Tina Turner's River Deep Mountain High, Screaming Jay Hawkins' I Put a Spell on You and Randy Newman's Mama Told Me Not to Come.

Worth every penny.

No, you will not find songs like House of the Rising Sun on this CD, but you will find some more hippy sounding songs and not as blusey. Well their still are some blues numbers like the brilliant 'I put a spell on you', which sung in Burdon's wonderful voice just sounds absolutely wonderful. Also a very clever version of Randy Newman's "Mama told me not to come" illustrates their ability to make well-known songs sound their own. The track "Gin house blues" obviously suggesting his later problems with drink. A good half of the tracks are actually written by Eric Burdon himself, which can explain the fact that the tracks have a more phsychedelic sound to them. Tracks like 'Sky Pilot' are not very taxing on the brain to work out what they are about!

Fun is also something that can be heard easily on this album, starting with a message -with upbeat backing- to San Franciscan nights about moving to San Francisco if you can't understand the song always makes me laugh. Even without the classics buy it it's really good!
