Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
In the days before "girl power" became slick and over-produced, Bananarama were exuberant and loveably brash. The Very Best of Bananarama starts at the beginning with their first hit (with Fun Boy Three), "It Ain't What You Do, where they mixed a punky attitude with uplifting Motown-inspired pop. As has been said, they had nearly as many hits as the Supremes, and this 22-track collection includes most of them. Their girl-next-door appeal was cemented by the fact that early songs such as "Robert De Niro's Waiting" and the deadpan "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)" sounded like they were singing in a loo. In 1986 they had a complete overhaul when they linked fortunes with Stock, Aitken & Waterman and came up with such hi-energy classics as "Venus" and "Nathan Jones". By the early 1990s, line-up changes had taken their toll, and on songs such as "Movin' On", the Bananas sounded like a shadow of their former selves. Still, it was fun while it lasted. --Lucy O'Brien

CD Description
A collection of Bananarama's most popular hit singles from the eighties and early nineties. Stock, Aitken and Waterman wrote and produced the majority of their songs including 'Venus' 'I Heard A Rumour' and 'Love In The First Degree'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Pop!, 11 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This updated "Best Of" release sees the girls develop from their very amateur sounding early singles, to the slick & sexy look and sound of their late '80's peak (Venus / I Heard A Rumour / Love In The First Degree).. The post Siobham Fahey releases from 1991's "Pop Life" featuring Jacquie O'Sullivan are by far the stand out tracks. The Youth produced "Only Your Love" and "Preacher Man" are mature and well crafted dance / pop songs with a harder edge and chunkier beat. Their relative failure as singles is the source of frustration for fans. Following O'Sullivan's departure - Keren and Sara returned to Stock and Waterman to fullfil their contract with London Records - the results of that union, "Movin' On" is adequate pop fodder while "Last Thing On My Mind" is weak vocally.. This collection misses a few gems that didn't set the charts on fire upon release (Trick of the Night / More Than Physical / Trippin' on Your Love.. All great tracks). Non fans may not even be aware of the 2 albums recorded after "Please Yourself" being 1995's "Ultra Violet" and 2001's "Exotica". Their singles are not included here as they were not released under the Warner label. However, in all it contains the cream of a very successful career which is still chugging along. The Girls are about to celebrate their 20th anniversary with a concert & TV special in the UK..

5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive Bananarama collection yet..., 15 Feb 2005
I still remember the first album i bought with by own pocket money when i was eleven way back in 1989 - it was Bananarama's The Greatest Hits Collection. From then on, i was hooked on them. This album, "The Very best of Bananarama" sums up their lifetime of work and success. From "It Ain't What You Do" right up to "More More More" - all these are British pop at it's best in the 80's and early 90's. Bananarama was more than a girl-band - they were an icon that sets a standard for all all-girls bands that came and went after them. Every single track here define how great the Nana's were. Although towards the end of their heydays the hits have slowed down, the songs are still worth listening to. The best thing about this collection is the CD2 which features mostly 12" mixes of their hits. Too bad the 12" of "Love, Truth and Honesty" was not included as to me that's their best song and most honest song ever. Goddesses on a mountain top indeed!!

(REAL NAME)
this is one of those albums that you will never get tired of.
it's got that feel good factor that keeps you listening.
it's great for those who remember the girls in their hey day and great for first time listeners too.
these girls set the standard for bands like atomic kitten, girls aloud and the spice girls and a very good job they did too.
