Product Description

This is a collection of poetry, verse, and rhymes, ranging in length between a couple of lines, to a couple of pages. It includes the witty, the somber, the lewd, the sweet, and the tasteless. The perfect thing to pick up for only a few minutes here or there. There's not too much of any one type, and Silcock's introductions to sections are nice, and not too long. There are the works by well known poets, and then there's the anonymous works, which were part of oral culture, or was carved on tombstones hundreds of years ago. But there's also the poems which were sent in private letters by assorted people, the epigrams made up by politicians, and the short works that were printed in newspapers, magazines, and periodicals.

Verse and Worse has been around for a good few years now. It is packed full of useful and amusing poems, as well as those written by some of the great poets of yesteryear. Anyone wanting to develop an interest in poetry would be well advised to get hold of this book whie it's still around.

Such gems as 'Ding, dong, dell, pussy's down the well; now we've put the Dettol down, never mind the smell' and others, are there, and they act as a useful dilution to the more staid and regular poetical works.

Since its inception many decades ago, this book has provided much interest and stimulation to many people. It is good for anyone who wants to search for a humorous chunk of verse for a speech, or for fun, yet it is also perfectly adequate for someone who simply wants to discover what this word' poetry' is all about.

In short, it is a witty and brilliant compilation, coupled with passages of verse that are all worth a second read. Well worth the money - and anyone can pick it for pennies now.

There are an awful lot of poems where the humour depends on finding a Chinese or Dutch accent hilarious.
