From start to finish this wonderful piece of romantic magic realism is a roller coaster ride. It's filled with magic moments; almost every page displays an astonishing imagination at work. Why is this novel not better know? There is enough here for it to be a pleasure when read again and again. Truly astonishing.
The plot itself is a fairly simple tale of battling magicians, once all the mysteries and magic are explained, but the suspense is held right up to the final pages. The characters, too, are a curious bunch. If it has a flaw at all it is perhaps in the rather dispassionate nature of the narrator, and also in the rather muddled descriptions of the Empire State Building and the battle between the magicians. This is odd, because, eslewhere, the sense of place is very sharp.
These are quibbles, though, and this is highly recommended. Fans of Jonathan Carroll who can't wait for his new one would be well advised to try this.
