Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Victor Carl, the endearingly crooked but highly effective Philadelphia defence attorney of choice for professional criminals great and small, is back--which is good news for the many fans of William Lashner's Hostile Witness. In Veritas, Carl is hired by a young woman who is convinced that her sister's suicide was really a Mob hit. But Carl, who knows a Mob hit when he sees one, doesn't believe it. He and his attractive client search for the truth inside Veritas (get it?), the shabby mansion where the family secrets lie buried. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

Critical acclaim for Hostile Witness:

“Lashner navigates the seamy side of the legal profession with skilful pacing, finding betrayals, both personal and professional, at every turn. Suspenseful… a promising debut”
Publishers Weekly

“William Lashner is a remarkable new writer – quick, witty, funny, authoritative”
Nelson DeMille

I have read both of William Lashner's books. In this and in the previous one I found the plots intriguing and working just fine; as for the characters, I can recall just a few of the most important authors outlining and detailing theirs so keenly and effectively with so few words; the narration itself is fast and flowing. I have no doubt to define Mr.Lashner work a page-turner, so what's the problem with him? He should really write more books! If he is as good a lawyer as he is an author, then he's the one I'd rather have at my side before a Court, but should he ever decide to turn into a full-time writer this would mean happiness for avid readers like me!

Strong Follow-up to Hostile Witness! 22 Aug 2005
By bobbewig - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
In Veritas, Lashner's second novel featuring Victor Carl and company, he proves that Hostile Witness, was no fluke. Lashner's characters are multidimensional and memorable. His plot is well-developed with interesting sub-plots and his narrative style keeps the flow of the book moving along at a nice pace. Veritas is well-worth reading but it is not without some flaws. Lashner uses so many characters that it is hard at times to keep track of who's who to whom without a scorecard, so to speak. Further, it took a bit too long to tie together the complex main plot and sub-plots, and some of the decriptive passages went on too long. A little more editing would have made Veritas even more enjoyable for me. Nonetheless, Lashner is one of the better writers in his genre today and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of his books.

An original sequel 9 Jun 1999
By Alexander Gitlits - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
First things first-"Veritas" is different from "Hostile Witness",i.e. it's NOT a courtroom drama. Say what you want, but this is a brave move for the author(can you remember another series with novels belonging to different sub-genres?)."Veritas" is Victor Carl playing Philp Marlowe. It's a really good novel with lots of interesting characters(including Beth, who is back working with Victor). The only drawback is that Victors mind isn't as sharp as Marlowes,so it sometimes takes him forever to come to raver obvious conclusions.I liked "Hostile Witness" better, but this one is still good.I admire Lashner for writing noir novel instead of another courtroom drama, but,to be honest, I hope the next one will be the latter.

It's an Excellent Read! 22 Jan 2002
By "wcanglin" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I read Veritas 1st, then read his first novel, Hostile Witness. I would advise reading Hostile Witness before Veritas since the novels devleop Victor Carl's personality. Both books are excellent reading!
Wm. Lashner is a great writer. He creates an exciting story and also caused me to think about how I would react in the same situation.
I am looking forward to his future books!
