The Best "Rigoletto" ever recorded!!!, 10 Jul 2001
This is the best recording of "Rigoletto" known to me and the reason is simple: all principle singers are perfectly suitable to there roles. Starting with Alfredo Kraus: Duce's role is one of the best roles Kraus has ever done. It suits to his voice to perfection and it seems so easy, even high D-flat and D. He's amazing. Starting from "Questa o quella" finishing with "La donna e mobile" everything is perfect. Now Gilda, Renata Scotto. It is my opinion that Scotto is the best Gilda ever, her voice is so clean, so childish, something that comes from the heaven. she is perfect Gilda. And what about my favourite Rigoletto of all time Ettore Bastianini? Well, Rigoletto is definitely his best role, suitable to his voice. Listen to his terifying high notes: nobody can produce the sounds Ettore does when he sings: "E foglia!", then his curse at the end of the first act, 2nd act, "la ra, la ra" followed by "Cortigiani" and the end of the 2nd act with Scotto is unbelievable and finally the last curse: "O, la maledizione" all this is so briliant, terrifying and wonderful at the same time. And finally Cossotto and Vinco are superb Madalena and Sparafuccile. This is MUST HAVE CD! "Rigoletto" is my favourite opera and this recording made me to love it. If one wants to listen to "Rigoletto" first time in his life, this is the best recording to listen to. It makes you understand the power and all the magic that "Rigoletto" has.

At long last available on CD!, 29 Oct 2001
I can't understand why this important recording was not rereleased decades ago, since it is one of the key recordings of this opera. First and foremost, it has the finest Gilda ever recorded in Renata Scotto, for pathos, musicianship and excitement no other comes even close. The young and ever stylish Alfredo Kraus is a pleasure to hear as the Duke, his is bel canto in excelsis. And even though I love Ettore Bastianini, I wish I could praise more his vocally imposing but dramatically weak Rigoletto. There is no denying the sheer glory of his singing, but many key moments go unnoticed, perhaps he was still rather young for all the psychological demands of the role, but you won't find here the depths Gobbi, Fischer-Dieskau, Taddei, Panerai, Bruson and Zancanaro find in this greatest of all Verdi roles. Still, the magnificent voice is worth having per se, and you just should NOT MISS Scotto and Kraus.

Rigoletto. Kraus,Scotto, Bastianini , 17 Nov 2006
This is a very interesting recording of this popular opera. The tempi are a little slower than usual in places, which makes for even more poignancy in some areas of the opera.
Both Scotto and Kraus are young, their voices sound young too. Scotto's voice is much lighter than it later became. In fact I don't think I would have recognised "Gilda" as Scotto unless I had known it was her! Kraus is self indulgent here, singing interpolated high notes, but effectively so. He is the libertine Duke after all.
Bastianini is a compelling Rigoletto and sings his role with comfort, pathos and elegance.
Cossotto sings well and is a nice contrast.
Whether you like this or not is a matter of personal taste. It is certainly an enduring testament to two young singers and is an essential recording for Scotto or Kraus fans. There are a few excellent recordings of this opera out there and for my money this is one of them.
