Although I find the sound quality poor and the lack of any libretto lamentable, the singers are of such high quality that they shine through this. By the time you have listened to it a few times, you will forget the understandable shortcomings of a live recording made in 1945. Leonard Warren portrays the most amazing pathos in his voice as the desperate, crippled father, Sayao as Gilda soars to each note and Bjorling is perfect as the profligate young Count. They are so good that, although you would probably still want a modern version of Rigoletto which takes advantage of today's recording techniques, you will still treasure this one.

This is a magnificent recording. All the main artists perform with such glorious security.
Jussi Björling, Leonard Warren and Bidù Sayão are the stars in this perfect recording of my second favorite (my first is La Traviata) Verdi opera.
This recording is worth the price for Björling alone, but hearing him teamed with such a stellar cast is something to treasure.
The conducting and orchestra playing is also at a very high quality level. Cesare Sodero is a conducter I had not heard of until I saw this recording, but he proves to me that he is a very capable conductor that drives the opera forward without dragging it or overplaying the orchestra or the singers.
It is highly recommended to anyone who likes the opera, a fan of Jussi Björling, Leonard Warren or Bidù Sayão.

There are so many fine recordings of this opera. The two with Robert Merrill in them are each fantastic. The Sutherland/Pavarotti is also superb. This recording just beats them. Jussi Bjorling's singing has never sounded fresher or stronger. The ring in the high notes and phrasing is breathtaking. Bidu Sayao's Gilda is heartfelt and full of youth and innocense. But this recording is all about Leonard Warren. He owned this role, perhaps like no other. The golden richness of his mature baritone pours into the hall and resonates like no other. It was a miraculous instrument. The orchestra and chorus are also quite superb on this recording. The intensity of this performance cannot be matched, even by the other live Warren recording from the Met, with Richard Tucker and Roberta Peters. If you can't abide live recordings, try one of the Merrill studio recordings, but if you can, even only a bit, buy this recording. It's priceless. I live in the USA and it's not available here. I decided it would be worth it to order it from overseas, and it was. A treasure and feast for the ears
