Benchmark recording, 27 Feb 2007
This review is from: Verdi: Requiem [DVD] (DVD)
This is a live recording of a performance in the Usher Hall in Edinburgh from the 1982 Festival. A mighty fine orchestra and chorus, 4 perfect soloists and a master conductor - what better combination could you wish for? The 4 soloists are all in the prime of their singing careers - Margaret Price, before the nerves hit her and led to her cancelling many live appearances - spins the most stunning notes in golden, floating arcs - the Requiem aeternam in the Libera Me is music to weep to; Jessye Norman, officially as a majesterial mezzo although her voice was already moving towards the soprano range; Jose Carreras before his voice was inevitably weakened by his battle with leukaemia; and Ruggiero Raimondi, with a voice like the darkest velvet. The performance is electric, the live setting only adding to the atmosphere; the recording quality is excellent particularly for the 1980's when many performances were recorded on videotape and are now transferred to DVD with variable results - unlike this disc which is beautifully clear in both picture and sound.
Unreservedly recommended as a benchmark recording!

Electrifying, 29 Jan 2011
This review is from: Verdi: Requiem [DVD] (DVD)
The live recording when this was broadcast from the Usher Hall at the Edinburgh Festival in 1982 was marred by terrible sound problems. I'm glad to be able to hear it without those glitches. This DVD has good sound for the 1980s. It is preferable to have the sound linked through to a decent hi-fi and speakers for a fuller appreciation. OK it may not match the sound recording qualities of modern performances but I'd rather see an exceptional concert like this one with decent sound than a run of the mill perormance in high quality sound.
The 4 soloists are excellent, the LSO under Abbado were a magnificent orchestra for live performances - their frequent live broadcasts on radio 3 were a highlight of my classical music listening in the 80s. The choral work is intense and raised the hairs on the back of my neck on several occasions.
I believe that "less is more" in all forms of music. I feel privileged to have heard music conducted by Claudio Abbado. He is one of classical musics best ever conductors for letting the music speak for itself and it certainly does that on this performance. If you prefer the conductors signature stamped all over the work and to see the unrestrained ego that some conductors have colouring the composers work you'll maybe be less impressed. But for me, the whole performance is electrifying.
Cannot recommend this enough. Five stars is not enough.

Powerful, emotional, draining, inspiring., 14 Aug 2001
This review is from: Verdi: Requiem [DVD] (DVD)
Everyone knows the intensity of Verdi's masterpiece and here is an opportunity to hear and see the experience via the next best thing to being at the Usher Hall itself. Don't be put off by the date (1982); many of these artists were in their prime then and it shows. Amazon may be right by saying that Guilini tops the VR stakes, but that would simply mean he gets six stars. More of the same please.
