Does NOT require a special SACD player,
By
This review is from: Verdi - Requiem (Audio CD)
To clear up any confusion prompted by the Amazon info above, you will definitely not need SACD compatible hardware in order to play this set. My CD player was manufactured way before SACD was invented and these discs work fine on it. The sleeve notes state that this release is a hybrid SACD, and therefore compatible with all SACD and CD players.
As for the music, I've only formed first impressions, but it has had favourable reviews on Radio 3. The sound quality is excellent.

SEMYON BYCHKOV and the Verdi Requiem,
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
Semyon Mayevich Bychkov was born in 1952 in Leningrad but became a US citizen in 1993 making him a Russian-American conductor! This recording of the Verdi Requiem brings together all of the aspects of Bychkov's gifts as a conductor in a performance that is truly operatic in nature and yet blissfully sacred. Part of the success of the recording lies in his choice of soloists - Violeta Urmana, soprano and Olga Boradino, mezzo-soprano have complementary voices (vibratos are similar and ranges are extraordinary), Ramón Vargas, tenor has just the right amount of heft and ring to make his passages memorable, and the always reliable Ferruccio Furlanetto, bass repeats his sound interpretation of his important bass solos.
Bychkov conducts the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln and WDR Runfunkchor Köln along with NDR Chor and the Chor des Teatro Regio Turin - massive forces that he controls with passion and verve. Bychkov understands this mighty work and pulls impassioned performances from his orchestra and chorus and soloists, making this one of the most magical Verdi Requiems on CDs. Grady Harp, May 11 |
