For me this is possibly the greatest opera ever written, and Vickers perhaps the greatest Otello we've had the privilege to hear. The Esultate at the start wobbles a bit, and the acting overcomes the singing at times, but his interpretation is thrilling beyond belief. Matched perfectly by Mirella Freni [listen to the end of Act 3], not entirely convinced by Glossop and rather unnerved by the recording levels [not in a bad way] and cuts, but, my God, I have to lie down after listening to this. The great duet at the end of Act 2, when Iago convinces Otello of Desdemona's infidelity makes my hairs stand on end, but then, there are dozens of moments like that. Jon Vickers is on fire throughout, triumphant, raging, and ultimately utterly destroyed. Vickers doesn't miss a beat. This is overwhelming. If I had to go to Heaven with one recording, it would be this [no, actually I need his Peter Grimes and Florestan as well]. This is utterly fabulous from start to finish.
