4.0 out of 5 stars Cutting Verdi 16 May 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
I very much agree with the review of this set in its original CD issue. Vickers adds more shading than in his Serafin recording, and you will hear a mature tormented Otello with many shades. Freni is gorgeous and Karajan gives probably the most powerful interpretation of the score - at times almost too loud.

However, the cut in the glorious Act 3 ensemble is utterly bizarre - I can't even guess why on earth the producer and the singers let it happen. Surely Karajan's dictatorship was not that powerful?

Having said that I'd still recommend this recording if you love this masterpiece.

VV

PS: Beware a live Del Monaco/Gobbi recording from Tokyo with TWO tiny cuts in the ensemble of acts 2 & 3 - even more sameful!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Otello ever? 8 Dec 2012
For me this is possibly the greatest opera ever written, and Vickers perhaps the greatest Otello we've had the privilege to hear. The Esultate at the start wobbles a bit, and the acting overcomes the singing at times, but his interpretation is thrilling beyond belief. Matched perfectly by Mirella Freni [listen to the end of Act 3], not entirely convinced by Glossop and rather unnerved by the recording levels [not in a bad way] and cuts, but, my God, I have to lie down after listening to this. The great duet at the end of Act 2, when Iago convinces Otello of Desdemona's infidelity makes my hairs stand on end, but then, there are dozens of moments like that. Jon Vickers is on fire throughout, triumphant, raging, and ultimately utterly destroyed. Vickers doesn't miss a beat. This is overwhelming. If I had to go to Heaven with one recording, it would be this [no, actually I need his Peter Grimes and Florestan as well]. This is utterly fabulous from start to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but not great 10 Feb 2013

Everyone in the cast sings very well, but the emotions are a little too uniform. It is definitely worth listening to, but you will not be moved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Verdi: Otello (2 CD/CD-ROM) 22 Oct 2010
By Bjorn Viberg - Published on Amazon.com
Verdi: Otello (2 CD/CD-ROM)is a recording under the direction of the one and only Herbert Von Karajan who leads the Berlin Philharmoniker on this EMI Records Ltd recording from 1974. Charles Osborne has written a very well-written essay entitled "Othello: an Introduction" and also written a very informative synopsis. The lyrics are only available in Italian and the booklet is 79 pages. Jon Vickers is amazing in his role as Otello and it is truly a pleasure to such a fine tenor. Highly recommended. 5/5.
