5.0 out of 5 stars A Legendary Recording Now in Great Sound 8 Oct 2011
By Wagnerfan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Everyone who knows Verdi recordings knows this Otello so it would be a waste of time going into the performance. It is legendary broadcast and the greatest conducted Otello ever put on discs. Now to the basics. The sound on this transfer is astonishing (a word used by Ward Marston, the recording producer in his introduction.) I agree. No more boxy and 'airless' RCA transfer. You can put that away in a closet somewhere.

Included in this recording are the radio announcements by Ben Grauer which enhances the feeling you are listening to the broadcast live. The voice is very clear and distinct. Like Mr. Grauer is in the room with you.

The only slight problem, and this seems to be the norm now days restoring old recordings, are three inserted clips from the rehearsal tapes where mistakes were made during the original broadcast. These are a missing line by Iago from Act 1 and two 'flubbed' entrances in Act 2. I would have preferred the mistakes being left in for a more honest evaluation of the original performance. A slight problem, but to hear this broadcast reproduced in excellent mono sound is tremendous news for Toscanini fans. A wonder.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Big Letdown 14 Mar 2012
By Boyd Conrad - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have been a fan of this recording since acquiring it on LP in the mid 50s. I am also a fan of Ward Marston, and have just acquired his masterful restoration of the complete recordings of Moriz Rosenthal. This album is not, to my ears, in the same league as the rest of his work. The sound is unnaturally bright (hard to achieve with a recording of this age) and seems to have been remastered through a bass filter. The "organ pedal" under the opening storm scene is recessed to the point of inaudibility, making everything else sound shrill. With all due respect to the greatness of the performance and the different hearing of other reviewers, this set's sound balance has replaced "boxy" with "airless," a change I cannot bring myself to accept as an improvement. My advice would be to look elsewhere for a listenable transfer of this masterpiece.
