This Verdi Requiem is as good as his Tannhauser and Lohengrin...that is to say, perfect in every respect...chosen tempi, range of dynamics, phrasing, depth of understanding, orchestral detail, sense of overall line and scope...etc.
He is the conductor I've been waiting for all my life. He seems to have synthesized the best characteristics of every great conductor of the past.
His interpretations of Wagner operas are, simply put, are a Kilamanjaro above a level plain compared to even the greatest of the previously released performances both commercial and bootlegged. I only wish he had more "golden age" sopranos at his disposal to support his vision. Urmana is excellent in the Verdi, but the sopranos appearing in the Wagner operas are more than a bit less than great.
