Product Description

Product Description

This unique programme is the first time that all the ballet music from Verdis operas has been brought together in a single recording. Although The Four Seasons from I vespri siciliani (The Sicilian Vespers) and the ballet scenes from Aida and Otello have survived, substantial pieces from Il trovatore and Don Carlo are more often cut, while the ballet from Jérusalem is all but unknown. José Serebriers recordings with the Bournemouth Symphony have resulted in some great successes with unusual repertoire. This release will be of interest both to opera enthusiasts and to those eager to explore Verdis neglected and relatively small body of concert music.

José Serebriers work with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra has resulted in some great successes with unusual repertoire, such as the vivid performances (Gramophone) of Ned Rorems symphonies (8.559149) and their acclaimed series of Stokowski transcriptions. This release unearths plenty of barely known Verdi to go along with more familiar ballet scores, and will be of unique interest to opera enthusiasts as well as those already attracted by his brilliant and better known orchestral gems.

Review

A very attractive collection of Verdi s little known ballet music from Serebrier and his Bournemouth forces, with nearly two hours of elegantly performed music on a single disc. --Christopher Dingle, BBC Music Magazine January 2013

Blu ray sound makes this a disc to treasure! Verdi's Ballet music, usually cut from stage and recorded productions, makes its mark here. Operas that are still often staged are now to be really completed by getting to know this disc. Even those operas which are are themselves often cut or mauled are given their full complement of dance. The Otello Ballet music I knew only from an RCA recording made in Rome in the early 1960's conducted by Tulio Serafin. As far as I know no other reording includes it. The Don Carlos music is also usually omitted from an already lengthy score, but it is a pleasure to listen to. Macbeth, Trovatore, I Vespri Siciliani, as wel thisapplies to. Only Aida, whose ballet music, not usually omitted , finds its place here.
The BSO playing is expert, as the conducting so seems to me.
The quality of sound however is the clincher here. I could wish there were more discs issued in this format.
Oh Noble Naxos!

4.0 out of 5 stars really all Verdi's opera ballet music 25 Oct 2012

The most important I think is that it is all de ballet music Verdi wrote originally for his operas, or for the french versions of them (Macbeth, Trovatore, Jerusalem, Otello). The 5.1 sound is good, but I think too strong the bass sounds, as if it was performed in a very small place. Though, it is a good version, and, as far as I know, the only one with all the Verdi's opera ballet music. I'm glad I got it.
