To be honest I was a little underwhelmed when this was given to me as a gift by my beloved wife, as the box description didn't really do anything for me (probably due to our multi-cultural world where everything has to be in 50 languages, reducing the amount any manufacturer can actually say), but I resolved to give it a go and see what the fuss was about.

The reason for the gift was that my Apple iPad 4 with Retina Display - Black (16GB, WiFi) (also a present from my wife) had become something of a frustration due to the lack of memory. Whenever I go away on business I like to take at least a couple of movies to watch, and apart from the shockingly low memory capacity, I quickly get frustrated by the nonsense of adding stuff to itunes, syncing, and then later on discovering that I'm not in the mood for any of the stuff I have added. This product solves those problems forever.

In the box there is a neat little black box, roughly the size of a very slim wallet, a USB to USB micro cable for charging it up, and a brief but perfectly adequate instruction manual. I charged the Mediashare from a standard Apple iPhone charger and in less than 30 mins it was fully charged (there is a status led to let you know when it's ready). While that was happening, I downloaded the free app from itunes onto both my iPad and my iPhone. When the Mediashare is switched on it creates a little wifi hotspot (actually not that little, it seems to reach around most of my hose, which is quite impressive). You choose that hotspot from your wifi settings and you're ready to go.

    Verified Purchase
This item has only been used using Apple devices, so i am not able to comment on other devices. I have owned this item for about a week and it is a quite impressive item. I bought it for traveling. Its compact and portable and has a good build quality. I didn't find it difficult to setup using the MediaShare app. 1 week on from purchase and I am on a family break in the Scottish highlands. In fact I am writing this using the the internet bridge facility the MediaShare has and it works really well. The obvious advantage of using the Internet bridge facility is that you dont have to remember to change the WiFi your logged onto to have access to both internet and the MediaShare.

So apart from the internet bridge, during the car journey 2 iPads streamed different videos at the same time, again this worked really well. The battery would have run out after 4-5 hours but that was not a problem using a USB adaptor from the in car power ports. While on the break there has been up to 3 iPads and an iPhone accessing content or using the internet bridge in different combinations from SD card and external Hard Drive. The WiFi range is very impressive, i am staying in a fair sized cottage and i personally have not noticed anywhere that i haven't received full bars. I also have a 24MP DSLR camera the files that it produces are pretty hefty. But the MediaShare has allowed me to take the photos from the SD card and put them in my external HD, Also transferring some of them to my iPad. Again (you guessed it) this works really well. I haven't yet been in the situation that i have needed the MediaShare as a backup battery for phone or pad. I have connected both to it and they do switch to charge mode. so i have no doubt that this facility will work just as well as the others.

I've been looking for some time for a wireless adjunct to iPad storage and this seemed to fit the bill - especially at a price of around £40.
Here are my thoughts after using it with various iOS devices, and now an Android one, for a few weeks.

    The Hardware.
It has two storage-device ports and can host a standard SD Card (1GB to 128GB class 4 or better) and/or a USB mass storage device...a USB Stick, an external HDD or even a digital camera.
At the expense of battery life it can power an HDD via its USB port - but you can plug in a charger at the same time to get around this. I've successfully tried a Samsung 2.5" drive mounted in a USB caddy, which normally requires two PC USB ports to provide enough power but runs quite happily from the single MediaShare port.

    The Associated App.
The iOS version of the App installs an independent file system on your Device (it has no access to the underlying iOS file system) and sets up 'master' folders for Docs, Movies, Music and Photos and, to navigate this, it provides basic File Management capabilities - a sort of Windows Explorer-Lite.
The Android version sets up the same Folder-set under a parent folder called WDisk but, as distinct from iOS, it is within the Android file system and thus the normal File Management Apps have access to it.

The Apps' Home page has two 'sides', one for MediaShare and the other for your Device, permitting you to view the contents of either unit and copy files between them or between the MediaShare's two storage ports. This latter feature offers the possibility of backing up photos direct from camera (via USB) to SD Card or from a camera's SD Card to a USB device - very handy.
