I share the other reviewer's enthusiasm for this wonderful, heartwarming music.A reviewer of the "rival" version on Naxos states that that recording was a first. Not so.This excellent Brilliant Classics release is actually a reissue under licence from DGG Archiv of their stunning 1994 recording which caused many people to re-evaluate the composer. The Italian ensemble on Naxos, using modern instruments, emphasise, not unnaturally, the Italianate qualities of these works.Reinhard Goebel and MAK are well-known for their"gutsy" performances of baroque music, sometimes tending to excess. No such problem here. With superb sound and no lack of warmth they prove that Signor Veracini(himself no stranger to excess!)was familiar with the groundbreaking work of the orchestra maintained by the Court at Dresden which inspired Zelenka,Heinichen and, yes,Vivaldi!

I have plenty of classical cd's from this era by the 'usual suspects' (Vivaldi,Corelli, etc,) so thought I would branch out to try some lesser known composers. All I can say is that I was not dissapointed! Why these little known musicians slipped through the net is beyond me. Go purchase, pour a glass of wine, relax, enjoy. I did!

I bought this cd on the strength of a previous review. Veracini may not be the greatest composer, but it's good music perhaps best described as a cross between Handel and Vivaldi. Probably an inadequate description and I'll be taken to task by those who know more about music than I do. But I enjoy it and I'm very glad I took the risk.
