An exceelent compilation, 4 Mar 2004

This review is from: Venus: Masterpieces of Modern Erotic Photography (Paperback)
Like the other books compiled by Michelle Olley (Love, Lust, Desire, Femmes) 'Venus' showcases a large number of photographers, with a wide range of styles from the glossy kitsch of Pierre et Gilles to the beautiful B/W work of Cat de Rham. If you're just gettting into erotic and nude photography, this will give you a list of names you would like to investigate further. Most of the pictures are available elsewhere, but that isn't the point ; this is a superbly chosen collection (as are all the Michelle Olley books) with a diverse range of big and small name photographers. This has kitsch, classic nudes, abstract nudes, fetish, fun, nudist, and even a few uninspired 'top shelf' type shots, and if you find nothing you like in here, never buy another book of nudes !

Erotica from the glossies, 2 Oct 2000

This review is from: Venus: Masterpieces of Modern Erotic Photography (Paperback)
This book is beautiful. The reproduction quality is superb, with large images organized by photographer in alphabetical order, no nonsensical verse or smarmy text included. Michelle Olley's introduction and photographer bios are succinct and interesting. Credits/titles for the photos serve as the table of contents -- terrific idea. Oh, um, the pictures, yeah. They are the really beautiful component, of course. There are more than 150, and the emphasis is definitely EROTIC, with nothing from the cool, abstract world of the fine art nude, and very little that would qualify as standard sex magazine content. Many of the photographers here also have websites, so even if readers only used the book as a guide to what to seek on the internet, it would be well worth the price. "Venus" is an amazing and delicious survey.

I received this book as a gift. I'm not a prude - I own many collections of erotic photography. This book - however - I returned. It was really pushing the line to be porn pics. Way too many photos looked like some guy taking bad shots of his naked girlfriend in a hotel room - lighting awful, composition nonexistant. etc. etc. There were a few photos which I thought were well done, but they were greatly outnumbered by others that I'd consider to be more "trashy" and "taseless" than "erotic" any day. You should probably flip through this book at your local book store to see if this is the sort of thing you are interested in - the cover shot by no means represents the work inside the pages.

This book is horribly mis-named. There are no "masterpieces". Most images are of such low quality that I can't believe they have been published. Some shots are more like pornography than art. With the exception of one or two acceptable pictures, this book is garbage.
