4.0 out of 5 stars A good try 26 Oct 2006
By NB
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Unlike Franco's pathetic version, this movie at least attempts to follow the original story-line. The camerawork is often quite effective, and along with the black and white format does occasionally give a brooding chairoscuro which so oddly fits with the dark perversion of the theme. The sado-masochistic titillation is in proportion which Masoch's tale, and the setting is updated to modern times. The finale changes in this production, and although Wanda still teaches Severin a painful lesson she is not the saviour; and instead of being redeemed Severin is crushed. Still, a bold attempt to film a difficult tale. Admirers of the author and the book will probably enjoy this version.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent art erotic 19 April 2013

Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Finally I have managed to find the real film of the book ; this is so visual and clever and real manages to show the relationship between Severin and Wanda . great black and white scenes showing how their relationship developes , but I guess this wont be an easy entertainment for every one . yes the script and the acting is a little amusing at times , but I could almost say this is a classic [ forget belle de jour , this is the great s m film ] .

5.0 out of 5 stars Whats love got to do with it .... 17 Mar 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
The film shot in black and white has a few interesting elements and is based on the famous 1869 novel by Leoplod von Sacher-Masoch, where the term masochism is derived from. The plot revolves around an obsessive relationship between a man who makes a contract to become the slave of a gorgeous woman. He is a masochist and he expresses his masochistic tendencies through his sexual fantasies, while the woman acts more out of love than conviction. This leads to much conflict and the redefinition of love. Artistically filmed, and while there is a considerable amount of full frontal nudity, you never feel that the nudity is gratitutous, but rather that it is part of the overall fabric of the film. On the whole, an excellent movie that is erotic without being pornographic ...

3.0 out of 5 stars Review from "Predominant" by the lovely Ms Kathleen 15 Mar 2005
By Ray Arnone - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
By Ms Kathleen of Predominant:

"The impression this movie left me with was a glimpse inside the person once they begin to embrace FemDom. It reveals the struggle within the female and how that can play itself out in a real-time relationship. Is one just going through the motions to please another? Is there a point of no return when one truly embraces this way of life? Is it possible to be "cured" from these desires? The film asks these pointed questions but does not necessarily answer them.

If you are looking for a D/s film with a plenty of action, this isn't it. If you are looking for a film with terrific acting and an on screen chemistry between the actors, this isn't it. But if you've read the book and are looking to see the characters come alive, I would recommend it."

I have yet to see this version but I value Ms Kathleen's opinion. I have read the book and it is a must read for men who struggle with submissive desires. Taking her advice, I hope to see this film once I find an affordable copy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment in Furs 13 Feb 2002
By Lawrence - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This movie is dubbed in English and you can't watch it in the original language. The actors who did the dubbed voices are really bad. If you want to know what the movie was kind of supposed to be like, you can watch it with no sound and English subtitles. The default setting is dubbed English with English subtitles.
There is also little to no chemistry between the actors, and it is based on the novel but set in modern times.
