This is a great follow up to the original "Men are from Mars, Women from Venus". Men and women's behaviour is explained by the hormones in our bodies and how we become stressed for different reasons and in different ways. We unknowingly stress each other out because of our different hormonal make-up. In the original book, our different ways of thinking and behaving was observed, but not explained in this way. We were told how to treat each other to bring out the best in each other and this new book goes a step further by giving us an explanation according to our hormones. If we get stressed we produce the stress hormone, cortisol, which, if we produce too much of it, can have a negative effect on our bodies and health. He gives some good insights into how we can reduce stress, have a deeper understanding of each other's needs and make for more harmonious relationships. A great book.

I was given this book recently as a gift. I read the original 'Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus' years ago and thought it was an interesting way of describing relationships. I admit that I have not read this book cover to cover, but a couple of things are already bothering me:
1. Where are the references? Claims are made and some of the observations seem instinctively to ring true, but given that this book is claiming to be backed up by/based on 'ground-breaking' scientific research, it is strange that there are no actual citations of e.g. clinical studies. This is even more frustrating towards the end of the book, when we are given (non-biased?) 'advice' on nutritional supplements, but not told the basis on which these claims are made. Coincidentally, the recommended supplements can all be purchased on the author's website. Can you imagine the outcry if one of the big pharmaceutical companies tried this type of promotion - citing no actual evidence?
2. At the end there is an appendix to tell women which activities will increase production of oxytocine (to lower stress levels). Suggestions include 'flower arranging', making an 'artistic arrangement of fruit in the kitchen' and 'tidying up after a party with girlfriends' (sorry the actual words in the book may be different, I was reading a Dutch translation). Have we gone back to 1952??? I'm not convinced that these activities would decrease my stress levels! Also - where is the equivalent appendix for male readers? If this book is mainly targeted at women, the male author's advice comes across as rather patronising. Although he claims otherwise, he seems to be advocating a return to the past rather than suggesting new ways to balance male and female behaviour and increase mutual support.
All in all, this book comes across as a very thinly-disguised marketing exercise, to promote sales of nutritional supplements on the author's website.

Surprisingly great read 11 May 2010
By claude challe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I haven't read a John Gray book since his first "men are from mars, women are from venus". but when i was browsing a bookstore at the airport, i picked this book up to see what he was talking about these days. After reading the cover, i bought it and was pleasantly surprised on my flight. He remains on the path of relationships but this book helps to simply explain the science behind good and bad communication - stress hormones. His explanations are still witty and most have me chuckling at times but it's his tips that make it a great read. he covers easy ways to eat healthier, sleep better and what things I can do to create what he calls "feel-good" hormones. I am almost finished reading and can't wait to have my wife read it too.

A must read for anyone in a relationship 11 May 2010
By N. Cheeseman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
OMG, I loved reading this book!!! John Gray gets backs to his core principles and adds so many new interesting ideas about the inversion of the masculine and feminine poles, scientific studies bring a new light on the importance of nutrition in relationships between men and women and the information about hormonal balance and blood sugar were invaluable. I also loved how he links stress as one of the main enemies of the modern couple.

In addition, the color illustrations - and stories makes the reading even more exciting. A MUST read for anyone in a relationship.

A MUST READ FOR ANYONE IN A RELATIONSHIP 12 May 2010
By Book Lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I am so happy I picked up this book, I had no idea that hormonal balance is key to a successful relationship. John Gray explains in easy terms simple things that women and men can do to balance their hormones, relieve stress and therefore make a huge impact on their relationship. I also was able to see John's PBS special also entitled Venus on Fire Mars on Ice which also helped a lot not only with my relationship with my husband but with my whole family.
