Book Description

1 July 1999
They live in a flat in Hampstead: Bronwen, the trendy clubber; Gail, Alex's infuriating younger sister, a health freak and budding novelist; Keisha, the TV researcher determined not to be fenced in by a relationship. And Alex, our heroine, back in London after being dumped by her glamorous LA boyfriend. Though she's more or less solvent, Alex's life isn't getting any simpler, thanks to her dreary City job, lack of dates and spending money, and her infatuation with her very charming, very married boss. An invitation to the wedding of an old school friend and the brother of her old friend Tom seems like the perfect escape - until super-babe Snowy turns up and sets her cap at the groom, the charming boss turns up with his immaculate wife, and Tom takes it into his head to blame Alex for the ensuing disasters.

Product Description

From the Author

Venus Envy wrote itself...
I guess of all my books this one is the closest to me; I am rather like Alex Wilde, worrying about my body, my men and my jobs; this is for girls of any age who just feel that everybody around them is having a better time than they are... (you bet they`re really not). I hope you all enjoy reading it the way I enjoyed writing it! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Bestselling author Louise Bagshawe published her first novel, CAREER GIRLS, while still in her early twenties. She has since written five novels, all available from Orion. She lives with her husband in New York.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear me! 16 May 2012

Format:Paperback
What can I say about this book?
I picked it up with relish finding a LB book I'd not read, but found it so difficult to get into. I'm used to LB's instant fast pacy hook, but this just irritated me. The funniness didn't work for me, it was contrived and at times silly, no-one's that bad! It was as if LB had decided if Marion Keyes and Sophie Kinsella can do it, then so can I. Well let me tell you - she can't.
I found Alex Wilde the main character to be whiney and lame, so full of self pity it really got on my nerves. Her sister Gail was totally obnoxious, her mother unbelievably thoughtless. The two flat sharer's ended up nicer than originally expected but Tom, the love interest guy just never got to me.
I hate writing a review like this, especially from an author i've grown to love, but I just don't understand why she wrote such a tiresome book. As previously commented it was totally different to anything she's done before and maybe it was an experiment or something, if so, in my opinion it failed. It cannot compare to Monday's Child or some of her other books I've read and loved. Even the blurb didn't match up to the actual story, I was waiting for Alex to blossom, come good, but right to the end she remained miserable and unlikeable, even though she finally did something right. Sorry folks, this book simply wasn't for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 25 April 2006
Format:Paperback
I was meaning to read Venus Envy for a very long time after having read two other novels by Louise Bagshawe but I was disappointed. The heroine was self-pitying, helpless and even stupid on occasion, failing to see things that were so obviously in front of her face. One felt little compassion, sympathy or respect for her. The blurb says that Alex "decides it's time to put on her best TDO (Top Designer Outfit) and give Venus a run for her money" but this never really happens. She makes half-hearted attempts at making things right but never really sorts herself out.

It was a decent read but I simply did not warm to the main character. If you are after a good Louise Bagshawe novel, I would recommend Career Girls (very good, much less "fluffy") or Tuesday's Child (very similar plotlines to Venus Envy but is better).

Well, what can I say? The plot. It's there (barely) and stumbles around like a drunken bull in a china shop. However, this genre is not the type I usually read so it could be the style.

The characters. Oh dear. One dimensional, self absorbed, selfish, stupid, materialistic creatures. I guess Louise wanted Alex (the main character) to appear hard done by, however, all she could appear to do was wallow in her own pity, b*tch and moan. She sits around moaning how unfair everything is etc, and expecting everything to land neatly, in Gucci box, on her lap. When this `career' doesn't appear to work, she attempts to ruins her `friends' lives and wedding, the pleasant person she is.

A look into twenty something women in London? I'm a twenty something woman in London and all I can say is I'm glad I never had to associate myself with these people.

However, if you've had a stressful, hard few months at work and need a mindless book that requires absolutely no brainpower to read, then this is the one for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars I am a massive fan of Bagshawe but this book disappointed
The reason Louise Bagshawe is one of my favourite authors is because her characters are strong, ballsy women who are not afraid to go all out to get what they want. Read more
