Product Description

Product Description

Venom is a story of improbabilities. Gabriel Kane goes from a struggling architect to one of the most powerful men in the world; Armonía Solorsano -- a young Hispanic girl who grew up in a dilapidated suburban McMansion-turned-tenement -- invents one of the most important and influential pieces of technology in history; a non-profit organization goes from a charity to a decentralized domestic terrorist group; and the greatest democracy in the world finds itself falling into the ever-tightening grip of a dictator.

As five people come together with the shared goal of changing the world, they discover that their approaches are fundamentally and irreconcilably at odds. Their partnership becomes a bitter political and high-tech rivalry from which only one of them can emerge.

This novella by Christian Cantrell (about 16,000 words) portrays an intersection of politics and technology which is both extremely relevant, and frighteningly feasible.

Science Fiction Meets Human Struggle. 4 April 2011
By Stephanie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm a fan of Mr. Cantrell's books, and this book is no exception. I did not realize until I was reading this book that it is a sequel of sorts to "The Human Legacy Project," which I had not yet read. "Venom" is easy to follow and understand without having read HLP, however, after going back and reading HLP, I think it adds extra depth to the story.

"Human Legacy Project" is a true work of science fiction, more about the technology than the characters, while "Venom" takes the same technology and universe, and weaves it deftly among the complex development of the characters. Technophiles would probably prefer HLP, but for those readers looking for human struggle, "Venom" is a window into humanity.

Like all of Cantrell's works, the story ends abruptly. Although my first reaction is annoyance, because his books keep me wanting to turn the page, this device adds realism. After all, we never know what will come next in our own stories, which never have resolutions. Somehow, I get the feeling that a lot of his meaning would be lost if he were to write even one more page.

A worthy sequel to HLP 21 Nov 2011
By Ted R. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a pretty compelling sequel for the Human Legacy Project, which probably should be made more clear in the description.

This dark, dystopian novella goes deeper into the origins of the People's Party. Of Cantrell's works, it does a good job of character development. The ending doesn't feel nearly as rushed as his others and there's a good plot line.

I'd recommend this, together with the HLP, for a nice weekend read. Hopefully, there'll be a 3rd one covering what happens afterwards.

Serious undertones 24 Aug 2011
By Erik Musick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
After reading Containment, I picked up the rest of Cantrell's offerings. This, more than the others, was interesting. It had a number of undertones. Being so short, few are developed and left to the reader to ponder afterwards. This was my third read by Cantrell and I wish that I had read it later as I feel with some more stories under my belt I could have got more out of it in one pass.

No matter how many lies the government tells, there are people who never entirely lose their ability to see the truth people who aren't supposed to do anything more with their lives than consume, or have babies, or sell drugs, or swing a hammer, or blindly pull a trigger when they're told to. Terrorism and rebellion and hostile foreign governments are not the real enemies of the state. It is simple and pure truth that those in power can never fully eradicate from the populations they rule. "e;

"So the things we generally think of as rewards things like money and power they aren't the real rewards in life. Not from a physiological perspective. The real rewards in life are the tiny amounts of dopamine and serotonin that our brains release in response to things like money and power. "e;
