Product Description

Product Description

Poison is an everyday part of the animal world, and an essential tool for hunting and defence. A wide variety of insects, reptiles and amphibians use toxins to subdue their prey or to stop becoming prey to another predator. Even some mammals and birds resort to poison as a means of securing a meal or deterring attack! From the nine-feet long Komodo Dragon through species such as the King Cobra, Lionfish, Fat-tail Scorpion and Poison Dart-frog to the diminutive but lethal Black Widow Spider, author Steve Backshall takes a fascinating look at the different types of natural venoms. On a tour of the world's continents, he looks at over 60 of the most venomous creatures, describing their main characteristics and explaining how they administer their venom and what its effects are. Stunning colour photographs and exciting accounts of Steve's own encounters with some of these animals bring the world of natural venom alive. He also looks at the science of natural toxins, and at how natural venoms are increasingly used in medicine and for the treatment of chronic disease in humans.

venemous creatures 14 May 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book deals with 68 venemous and poisonous species that exist on all continents and seas except the polar regions. The species include snakes, birds, lizards, insects, rodents, fish, frogs etc. Following a chapter on toxins and venoms there are 6 chapters, one for each continent, which covers the poisonous species in that area.
There are good descriptions of all species which are accompanied by really excellent pictures.
A book to be highly recommended

This item is a hardbark A4 sized book with 160 pages. Every page is filled with amazing full colour photographs of some of the worlds most beautiful and poisonous creatures. Unusually, the text has a good scientific and technical grounding explaining not only about the creature but also how it is dangerous and the effects of the venom/poison. If you are going to buy one book on dangerous creatures for anyone, adult or child, I would thoroughly recommend this one.

A Kid's Review
Format:Hardcover
This a really thrilling journey through the world of venomous creatures. Each continent has members of the animal kingdom that defend themselves with venom. And it's all scientifically well documented. The illustrations are breathtaking. And the reader must be prepared for some surprises. I will reveal one: did you know that such a cute animal like the slow lori is venomous?
Steve Backsall's book is a mustread not only for the zoölogists among us, but also for everybody who is interested in the natural world and a warning for the adventurous travellers. There might be deadly danger waiting for you in that luxurioud jungle or safari lodge!!!
