4.0 out of 5 stars Solid book, just lacking a couple of things, 16 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I bought this book expecting that it would really get me to the out of the way places that the Lonely Planet television show always goes to. It did deliver on this account, and it turns out there are a lot of places that tourists just don't think about going to in Venice. It was good in giving preliminary explanations of things to see, but sometimes fell short when I wanted to learn more. It did help me get from Treviso airport to the city, but that wasn't much trouble. The restaurant section was pretty useful although they were still pretty touristy. I was glad to have the section on Mestre as well, but don't stay there, it looks like a pain to get into the city everyday. The map section was pretty detailed although you had to keep switching back and forth between pages. The language section was also lacking a couple of key terms like Sir and Madam. The pronounciation wasn't all that clear either, so I had to ask an attractive Italian woman on the bus how to pronounce some of the words...I'm not complaining too much. This is a good book for the person that is staying around for up to a week or so, and it was always with me throughout the trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Good Book, 29 May 2006

I usually travel with LP so maybe I am a little biased but I did find this book up to their normally high standards.

The legendary confusion of Venice's allyways meant I was wary of this book's maps (esp considering LP's less than perfect record in that regard). However I was pleasantly surprised and in 4 days in the city did not get lost using them. It was a little annoying the way they were split across several pages but i guess that was necessary to acheive the accuracy.

The tips to the sights and the walking tours were exellent. The restaurant and shopping sections were ok. I cant comment on the hotels section as I was in an apartment.

The prices (on everything) and some of the transport details were out-of-date.

Overall I would recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Long Weekend in Venice, 24 Aug 2002

Tina (Oakham, Rutland United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Venice (Lonely Planet City Guide) (Paperback)
Having never travelled in Europe alone before and not speaking a word of italian, I had studiously read up on my destination. This book did give me enough information so that when I landed in Italy I knew where to go and how to get there.
A very useful tool for the layman and it covers all the main touist area's. One draw back is, that after two days of tourists you can discover a different Venice in the back alleys and streets of this unique city. This should be highlighted more.
But I would probably not have enjoyed my trip half as much, without the preperation. Thank You LP.
