Format:Mass Market Paperback
Jack Gannon, a reporter for The Buffalo Sentinel, investigates the brutal murder of one prostitute and the disappearance of another, a woman who had picked herself off the street and cleaned up her life. The investigation points to one suspect--hero cop Karl Styebeck, a man with a secret past brimming with violence. Then there's the mysterious blue rig that haunts the highways. How is it connected to Styebeck and the victims?

As Gannon digs deeper, he risks losing everything--his career, his reputation and his future. With help from Adell Clark, a former FBI agent turned PI, Gannon gets the inside scoop on the murder investigation. But this puts Gannon and Adell in jeopardy of losing more than their jobs.

Author Rick Mofina has crafted the kind of protagonist that readers will yearn to read more about. Jack Gannon is tough but flawed, and he's like a pit-bull who won't let go. In some ways, he's emotionally disconnected, but the disappearance of his own sister years ago, pushes him onward. I hope the author continues with this character and his back-story. I'd love to see a series!

I think this is my favorite Rick Mofina novel yet! Vengeance Road is a gritty, top-notch thriller, with glimpses of evil thrown in to keep you turning those pages. Mofina's former career as a crime reporter keeps the writing concise and descriptive, the characters well developed and defined, and the dialogue true and believable.

Vengeance Road is a suspenseful `hold-your-breath' ride, with twists and turns at breakneck speed. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a heart-pounding race against time.

3.0 out of 5 stars So-so 2 Oct 2009
By P. B. Sharp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
A gritty Buffalo, New York newspaper reporter, Jack Gannon, takes on more than he bargains for as he tries to nail a rogue cop for the brutal ritualistic murder of a prostitute. He plunges into the fray although his job, his reputation and even his life are in danger. As he burrows deeper and deeper, his investigation carries him into a world of ritual killing, drugs and kidnapping. The rogue cop is just the tip of the iceberg.

This is a novel of the hard-boiled school. The writing is terse, not particularly descriptive, not graceful, but fits this genre. The characters are cardboardy but adequate - more complex psychological portraits would undoubtedly get in the way of the plot. But there are things about this drama that just don't seem to work. For instance, Gannon ludicrously is able to eavesdrop on a police department meeting, the door being wide open, and he thus learns the identity of the suspected cop in the death the prostitute.

And at the beginning of the novel you have a young woman, searching for her friend, take a taxi late at night to an urban park where hookers ply their trade and drugs are rampant. She dismisses the taxi and proceeds to walk into the park quite alone- into a lion's den. No woman in her right mind unless she were a hooker herself, would enter such a place alone at night. The scenario doesn't gel.

The difficulties of a newspaperman in trying to get a top story as opposed to a policeman with inside information are very apparent and you are rooting for protagonist Jack Gannon to not only succeed in getting his difficult scoop, but to solve a complex series of seemingly unrelated facts. The ending is satisfying, if a bit too warmly fuzzy, a good read but not a great one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you glued to the page 29 Sep 2009

Format:Mass Market Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Mofina's VENGEANCE ROAD is a tight, exciting, well-written murder mystery with just enough twists and turns to keep you guessing without overwhelming you with complexity. The author is a former crime reporter with many best sellers under his belt. It shows in the efficient and knowing writing of this master story teller. Gannon, the main character experiences ups and downs, discouragement and danger as he resolves to follow this tale to its conclusion. Mofina paints the people well with sparse but well chosen narrative. If you are a suspense and mystery lover you will enjoy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, predictable mystery 5 Oct 2009
By Denise Crawford - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This was an OK mystery story but was predictable with no real surprises. I believe it was the first of a new series. I am not a big fan of suspense thrillers where the investigative reporter protagonist solves the crime before the police do. I usually find that the novel is a bit of a cliché and a tad unbelievable -- and it was so in this case as well.

The story -- Jack Gannon, veteran newspaper reporter and past Pulitzer nominee, is on the trail of a psycho serial ritual killer whose motivations appear to be that of punishing sinners and those he deems "guilty" -- all women, and usually current or ex-prostitutes, drug users, etc. The sadistic, mentally deranged killer kidnaps these women, holds them prisoner, and then kills them. Who will he take next? Where is he taking them? Why is he doing it?

The narrative is a bit convoluted as we move back and forth in time and the character development is quite shallowly done. The story moves fast, really not that much to it. I didn't care that much about our intrepid hero -- who always "sticks with it" nor the victims -- too one-dimensional.

All in all, it's a mindless read and would probably be enjoyed by those who like the suspense serial killer genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense and mysterious read 24 Oct 2011
By Terry South - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Rick Mofina introduces Jack Gannon, a reporter for a Buffalo, New York newspaper. Jack Gannon comes upon a story where the opportunity for a huge scoop nearly falls into his lap, even with the threat of the newspaper closing, or the loss of his job, the story could not have come at a better time. The story involves the horrific murder of a young woman, Bernice Hogan, who had a history of drug abuse and a history of prostitution which was necessary to support her drug habit. Gannon's investigation into the murder suddenly takes an expected turn when he discovers the shocking identity of the leading suspect. When he convinces his editor of the legitimacy of his source, and protects that person's name, keeping the name a secret. The murdered woman's best friend disappears, and the degree of danger and suspense builds. We also learn that Gannon's sister disappeared years ago when she was 17 years old. The story line continues and we follow Gannon as decides to stake out the house of the lead suspect named by the police. Gannon then decides to follow the man and there are no police present. This is a fast paced read that will keep you up, it is a true page turner and I personally was anxious to find out all the answers and to see what was going to happen next. I would highly recommend to all those readers who love mystery and suspense, a true page turner.
