This is a very nice set with three beautifully chosen, researched and performed programmes. Naturally, the Gabrielis feature prominently, along with Monteverdi, Cavalli and Lassus. The Venetian Vespers performance also contains selections by the impressive but less known Giovanni Rigatti. Unfortunately, the second work in this set, the Venetian Easter Mass, is marred by some rather mindless editing, in which the lushly reverberant ambience of the recording venue is murderously truncated at the end of several of the plain chant selections. I'm not sure whether this was done by Brilliant in order to fit the music onto fewer discs, or whether the original Deutsche Grammaphon producers allowed it to happen. Either way, it is an lamentable flaw in a set which otherwise scores high for programme, performance and production. One other slight blemish on the set is that, as usual, to economise, Brilliant have chosen not to supply the texts of the vocal pieces.

I bought this anticipating that it would be a new recording but it isn't. The three elements that make up this box set comprise Venetian Vespers, Easter Mass and Music for San Rocco all of which have been previously issued on DG/Archiv. I was a bit disappointed as I have all the three excellent recordings separately! This box may well be going to a good charitable cause! If you haven't got the separate items it's a good buy and the sound quality and performance is, as ever with Paul McCreesh, first class.
