Book Description

A beautifully illustrated and harmonious exploration of one of the world's most beloved cities by acclaimed author Donna Leon

From the Back Cover

In a city as ancient as Venice, myths and legends passed down from generation to generation record more than just love or murder. They are the storehouse of a city's mores, emblems of its identity. In Venetian Curiosities, acclaimed novelist Donna Leon recounts some of Venice's most intriguing tales: an elephant brought in for Carnival wreaks havoc upon the city before seeking refuge in a church, the city employs prostitutes in an attempt to prevent homosexuality, innocent men are mistakenly condemned to death, a gambler bets the family palazzo. In an introduction and seven essays, Leon offers enchanting details and astute insights into Venetian customs of the past and present.

Venetian Curiosities is beautifully illustrated and, like Handel's Bestiary, it comes with a CD. Here the music is by Antonio Vivaldi, with tracks for each section of the book, expertly played by Il Complesso Barocco. With the splendid music, the delightful images, and the perceptive, amusing words of Donna Leon, Venetian Curiosities is a harmonious exploration of one of the world's most beloved cities.

Donna Leon is not only a superb novelist, but has produced an enthralling book about the city she loves and lives in, an absolutely fabulous collection of curious facts and wonderful gems - LOVED it!

The music was lovely and the book, though brief, was interesting. Quite different from Donna Leon's usual books. Not one ot carry with you but read in advance

Rather disappointed by the tiny format of the book! It would have been so much nicer if the illustrations had been bigger. The CD is nice with a good selection of music though so it is Ok but the very small size of the book does let it down!

I ordered this as a gift for my wife, an un-birthday gift as my wife is interested in anything to do with Venice and we are keen to pre-order all Donna Leon's new books. In this way we never miss one.
My wife really appreciated the gift and tells me she will let me enjoy it once she has completed her slow and relaxed appreciation of it.

What a waste of money! I could have found all this information in a travel brochure or a history book. If I were you Donna I would stick to what you do best (Crime Fiction)

This book is a great disappointment. It is far too short for the price charged and is not even particularly interesting. As a Leon fan I expected much more. Stick to Brunetti!
