Almost perfect 31 May 2007
By johnverp TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Aurelio Zen switches to Sardinia to solve a grisly crime. Several people are murdered in the same incident, which is captured on video, although the murderer is not. Zen is under political pressure to ensure that one particular suspect is not arrested for the crime.

I continue to have trouble warming to Zen - he is a loner and his relationships with nearly all characters in the book are strange.

However, this is one of the most beautifully written crime novels I've read. The plot is not overly complex but it is not difficult to keep turning the pages. There is a good well-thought-out twist to round things off. But the strengths of this book lie in the quality of writing and the insights shown by the author.

The novel is one of Dibdin's earlier efforts and it was a relief to see that crimes can get solved without internet searches and mobile phones, which probably says something about the other crime novels I've been reading lately!

In short, a simple story, but very impressive writing.

Format:Audio Cassette
Vice-Questore Aurelio Zen, officer of the Criminalpol section of the Ministry of Interior in Rome, is entrusted with a video cassette connected to the sensational "Burolo Affair" about which Zen has to write a report summarising the case to date. Since Oscar Burolo had a mania of recording the highpoints of his life, the video tape shows a dinner party at his extravagant villa in Sardinia, when suddenly Oscar and his party reel away from shotgun blasts apparently coming from nowhere, the murderer having passed through the elaborate electronic defences of the property as if they didn't exist.
But when, sometime later, a pickpocket manages to steal the video cassette while Zen is boarding a bus and when Zen is summoned to the Palazzo Sisti and asked by "l'onorevole" to go to Sardinia and fake some evidence in order to withdraw the charges against the main suspect Renato Favelloni, the inspector is about to start one of the most dangerous investigation in his career.
Very good action-packed thriller with breathtaking scenes in Sardinia and an Aurelio Zen in full swing! Michael Tudor Barnes delivers a stunning performance reading "Vendetta".

Format:Paperback
This is an excellent read full of evocative prose conjuring up three dimensional characters and vivid backdrops. The Italian cop, Aurelio Zen, is the sort of incorruptible loner that one expects of this genre of detective story, but he does not dazzle you with his confident intelligence or attractive lifestyle. Rather, one is drawn by his dogged pursuit of his profession and forgive his human failings as he makes his way through departmental rivalries and suspicious events that could be as much to do with his personal life as the case he's on. Dibdin clearly knows his territory well, and sweeps you through it without labouring the points. His prose is excellent, the pace well matched to the character and the final expose beautifully expressed to encourage you to pick up the next Zen book . . !

Another great Zen Novel
I love the way these books capture the atmosphere and contradictions of Italy. This is no except giving insight into the insular nature of life off the mainland.
